Is it necessary to use OEM brake part?

My service advisor quoted me $1200 for parts alone on my recent 30,000 mile service. He say it won't make it to the next service schedule. The price was way too much for my understand of a simple brake job consist of 4 pad, 4 rotors and 4 sensors.

My question are:
1) Is it necessary to replace with OEM part?
2) How different interms of performance from aftermarket parts?
3) Any aftermarket replacement recommendations?

I'll let you know in a few days I just ordered some rear brake pads, sensors and rotors for a DIY brake job. Parts with shipping $216.91.. Labor 6 pack of Guiness Stout and some sweat.

Have you noticed any squealing? I installed a set of Porterfield pads I got from Jerry at www.formymercedes.com on my SLK, and the reduction in dust was incredible, but the squealing was annoying and made the car sound cheap. So I was like hmmmmmm, Squealing in one hand, ridiculous dust in the other.... and decided to go back to OEM pads because they're always quiet.

That happens very frequently..... I ALWAYS recommend new rotors on the rear whenever we do pads for that reason on any mercedes. Too many comebacks and unhappy customers led to that policy. Fronts can cause it too, but the vast majority of the time its the rears.

Changed the pads only up front.... No squeeking. In the rear I installed new rotor and pads..... no squeeking
Maybe your brakes squeek because you did not use brake parts cleaner, and anti-squeek compound.
