Need replacement tires for ML430

What size wheels can I put on my truck? I know the standard is 275/55-17, but they are so hard to find and not very reasonably priced. The wheel store here told me that I could put on 265/65-17 for a great price. Please give me some feedback!

Thanks in advance!

Do you want what the factory suggests or just anything that will get you a good price? Tires is not a place to skimp. You can get the Dunlop Sp Sports on tirerack now for an unbelievable price of 103 a piece! I just went through a set of those and they ar great tires, especially for the price (of course they weren't 103 when I put them on).

Parents have had good experience with the Dunlop GranTrek's that came with the ML...on the second set now. First set lasted 50k, no problems.

But I don't think they make the GranTreks anymore, anyone can confirm this?

Either way, Dunlops are pretty good tires IMO, as LVDell mentioned, the Dunlop SP Sports may be a good choice, aside from Michelin (which are on the pricey side)

Yup, the Grand Treks are no longer made. Still on the fence between the Dunlops and Michelin to replace my Dunlops SP Sports. But $103 is hard to ignore vs. $175 for the Cross Terrain Michelin.

Agree on the price/preformance ratio. The SP Sprot 5000 Symmetricals are OEM on 2005s, I would stay with 275/55 as they have a much better proportion to the vehicle than skinnier tires, as well as better performance without any significant downside. Most tires in that size are in the $150 range, so that is a great buy. Tire Rack is great to deal with.

i have seen several conti 4x4s (on MLs and touaregs) at the wear bars @ 20k miles. Michelin Cross terrains are on my 320 and I love them, quietest tires I have ever owned. I would have purchased the SP5000s but they did not make it in the size for my 99 320.

I assume you mean "What size tires can I put on my truck?. is that size that difficult to find? have you tried The Rack? I found 12 brands with that size - Click Here. The Dunlop at $103 is a great buy. That's OEM on the ML500. Personally, I'll go with the Bridgestone Dueler HP - more expensive but you get a pretty good tire if you don't care about snow. The GoodYear Wrangler is even a better looking and handling tire if you want to spend the money. Forget your local shop, they're usually much more expensive than The Rack. Left: Dunlop; Right: B'Stone.

My current set of tires on my ML430 are the Bridgestone Duelers. Vey happy with them and they were far less expensive than the Michelins. Call TireRack..get them to give you a price and check their website for dealers in your area that do TireRack tire installations. Then call them and see if they can meet the TireRack price. I've done this on my last two sets and had the tires installed the next day at TiresPlus here in the Atlanta area.

Bridgestone makes crappy tires unles your name is Schumacher....

Stick with Dunlop, great price-performance ratio. I got some of the last TG35s and they have been on the car for 40k miles and still going strong! I have had snow here all winter and we also took the ML skiing twice. The TG35s are excellent in the snow and have a quiet ride on the Autobahn.

This is a botu the fifth set between several cars that I drove in the last fe years. I have only good things to say about Dunlop. Recent comparison tests in Germany also confirm that Dunlop produces tires that privide an excellent compromize for dry/wet use. Pirelli is also very good but often wear faster.

Though Michelin generally make good tires, they are having some problems to match wet performance of other manufacturers.

Tires

I did not like the OEM Grand Treks and was glad to get rid of them. I put the Michelin Cross Terrains on my 430 and my wife's 320. They are a fantastic tire - quiet yet great tracktion, especially in the snow. They are wearing well and with a 50,000 or 60,000 mile guarantee I'm not too worried. The best place I found to buy them was Walmart.

I don't know how your customers drive but I had them on my ML for 47K with no problems, and I don't drive mildly. I think your customers, maybe, just plain forgot to check their tire pressures regularly. And with all the potholes in NY, alignment (4-wheel) should be checked more often. I surely will not buy them as replacement, not becasue of wear, just because I don't need the agressive thread design - I'll probably go with the B'Stones. I've had B'Stones on all my cars and I love them.

I love my Michellin Cross Terrains! They kick ***!

Anyone know how long these tires should last. I have about 25K miles on them so far and they seem to be about halfway worn. These tires are great in the snow. I can't say enough good things about them.

Cheers

THey have a 50,000 or 60,000 mile warranty. I don't drive particularly easy and have over 30,000 miles with maybe half worn down. I agree - they are great in snow. We didn't have much in Minnesota this winter so it was not as much fun. I would definitely go back to them again.

I bought my 350 w 14k with stock Dunlops. The Dunlops looked fine tread depth wise. While driving it the next week or so, I couldn't believe the terrible oscillating tire road noise! After rotating and balancing didn't help, I bought a set of Cross Terrains. Great traction, road feel and quiet!
I can't believe tires would be that nasty after only 14k.

What're you talking about man??? Except for the dunlops on my ML, given the choice, I've always switched to B'stones - remember the RE71? What a cool tire, the S01, S02 and S03 are glue on the road. I don't know much about the truck series but given the option on performance tires, it's B'Stone or G'Year for me.

I went for 275-60-17 Toyo Proxes ST and i've been really happy so far. Excellent traction, no noise and great looking tires IMO.
