What's with the carpet in the rear fender wells of new ML

Did someone miscalculate the road noise or fender well noise?

The plastic on the cargo area sidewalls (and elsewhere) on the current ML scratches and marks very easily. I think carpe will be easier to maintain, assuming you don't let anything muddy or too dirty come in contact with it. Of course, carpet can be cleaned.

If you're talking about the interior which I think you are, using carpet is a lot higher quality both in look and material than the hard plastic.

I am referring to a carpet like material on the exterior of the ML in the fenderwell. How can it be kept clean or dry?

The carpet on the inside of the rear fenderwell's is to help reduce the noise level inside the cabin when rocks fly up and hit the inner fenderwell. Theres no need for carpet on the front, since the front inner fenders are not attached directly to the passenger compartment.

This first started on the Maybach, and since several other models have gotten the same treatment. - Nice touch....

Don't worry about keeping it dry, it's outdoor carpet. Clean it with a garden hose and towel if you wish.

In my C as well and it is very easy to clean. Still spotless after two years.

Audi's have it on the Allroad. Seems weird but I guess it works.

Did you see MB Tech's explanation--we're talking within the exterior fenderwells, not the cargo area.
