This new software needs a valve control body produced after a certain date in order to work properly. I do not know what that date is. The old valve control body was 2202701406 and the new one is 220270130628. There is a DTB (Daimler technical bulletin?) out on this. Hope this helps if you have this problem.
My valve body replacement was 220 270 14 06 28 which would appear to be a later number than the second one you posted (1406 vs. 1306). However, the results is the same...very smooth and no jumps or bumps. Mine is about 800 miles now and it is smooth as silk. This link documents the problem and solution:

Hmmmm. It looks like the "problem" is with the seven speed and not the new stalk shifter (as I thought). I will check into all those numbers and see what i get. Hey NevadaJack, I may end up driving to Vegas (hehe) to get this done at a dealer that has performed it at least once before. If that happens, would you be willing to disclose your SA's name?

I think Fletcher Jones in LV has done more than one of these...I'll PM you the SA's name.

jangy - They do not list a # for the DTB on the service order. It just says "per DTB". The dealer is Schumacher MB in Scottsdale, AZ. They have been excellent to deal with. If you need any additional info, I will try to help.

Hey sheepdog, is there any way youcould call the dealer and get me some details on the DTB? If I had a number, I could at least ask about it. as it is, they will just say that they haven't heard of one. Also, can you tell me what the SA wrote as your input that lead him/her to match it to that particular DTB? Maybe I am not communicating the symptoms in the proper english. Thanks for the help guys. Oddly enough, both Vegas and Phoenix are on the plans for the family in the next six months!!

Here is what the service invoice says: 5880 1000 90 85 Cause DTB T-B-27.60/68A Road Test and verified complaint Performed short test Inspected EHS # and has part # 2202701406 Replaced with 220270130628 as per DTB and flashed Module after repair. I would assume that which I have put in bold is the DTB no.

Hi Sheepdog,
you may be onto something here. i checked my last invoice and it says I have 220270140628, and not the new one you got as per DTB. Can you tell me what the SA wrote were the customer comments that led him to bring up the DTB? Maybe I am not explaining myself very well.

Anyone: Can anyone tell me where I can go to get the details of this DTB?

I don't know what the service mgr or MB tech rep said to the mechanic after I had my discussions with them. The work order says "Owner states the transmission will down shift from 2-1 when slowing down, very rough. See service mgr." I just told them the downshifts were rough and not acceptable. They did not seem to have any problem understanding the situation. Sorry I can't be of more help.

That number is the one they replaced the valve in my S430 with..and it runs very smooth for over 1000 miles now. The problem is simple to describe...the car shifts hard when coming to a stop or slowing down when downshifting from 2nd to 1st. If your SA's can't grasp that then go to another dealer. Almost everyone who has reported this problem has had it solved jangy...

I ama little confused on the part numbers, too. Is the one I have the most recent? Or is the 220270130628 that sheepdog mentions the one to get??

Don't worry about what part # they use or what you have. I have the 1406 and he has the 1306 and both have solved the problem. Just relate the problem as we have and tell them to fix it according to the TSB. Don't tell them how to fix it or what to use...just make the transmission smooth when it goes from 2nd to 1st in a downshift.

Hope you can get them to make it right...

After 4 trips to the dealer, I still have the hard downshifts. The current recommendation is to drive it for a while so the transmission can adapt to my driving style. Need I say I am skeptical that my driving style will influence the shifting from 2nd to 1st at 1-2 mph?

I agree with you. When the problem was taken care of by service, the transmission was smooth on the first drive. I could not detect the shift from 2nd to 1st at all from the first drive after the service. It is over 1000 miles now and it is still smooth and no problems.

After the installation of the new valve control body and software, I specifically asked the question whether the adaptive transmission would be required to "learn" again. The answer I got was no - there would be no additional learning time involved. The lack of hard downshift was noticeable immediately.

I too had the valve control body replaced on my E350 and it shifts smoother on 2 to 1 than my E320 with 5spd did. It also seems to shift gears faster than it did before.

Anyways, I will report later on when I get time tonight in the E (W211) section. I am going to go pick up the W221 right now.

Yes Jack it will be White with sport package. Its for my mom. It has P2, Sport, Pano roof, and a wood steering wheel.

Dealer just got it in today and the person who ordered it backed out at the last minute due to financing problems, so I jumped in. Too bad Im flying back out tonight to Canadia tonight as I just got back 2 days ago too.

I will post a small review when I land somewhere at SFO for the night.

The TSB can be found with this link. It mentions Electro Hydraulic Control and changing the valve body if necesary.

thanks, it does help.
Thanks also to everyone who posted in this thread. I do love my Benzes, and my dignity. I don't plan to let DC screw me and the info on this board has been a great resource. I am in no hurry to resolve this issue, but I do intend to "push" where the lemon law to new bounds. Consumers have rights and I will excercise mine. Shame on MBZ for only oiling the squeeky wheel, but at least mine is "loud"

Haha!! I guess the new valve body is so popular that it is on back order from Germany for 2 weeks. Funny how the same complaint got a "could not duplicate" a month ago and a new reply this time!!

thanks to jdr1000 for the help. I am hearing some tasty info that has to do with build date. Check yours out fellas. these cars cost waaaay too much to get stuck with a juicy lemon. For once I am becoming bitter enough to consider a move from MB. I was planning on replacing it with a new ML or even a GL, but now I think I may at least look "outside". Damn lucky the new X5 is not out. Then, there is always the love that I have for my E as well. I love Benzes sooo much, I just don't know if they are going to come around this soon. I wish I could shove a stick in the system's a$$ and move on. Ok, that does it. i'm not giving up. I love the brand and I'm sticking with it!!
