First snow! Need tire recomendations.

We got our first snow today, a couple of sloppy inches. Very disappointed in this ML 500 with Bridgestone Turanza ER 30 tires (255/50R 19). I wasn't even that crazy about them on plain old wet roads. Does anyone have a recommendation for something better? Michelins? Anything else?

Hi,

Not much choice if you don't want to change tire and wheel size: The only tire authorized by Mercedes ("MO" marked) is the Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow:

(which isn't the worst choice you could make anyhow). $185/piece @ TireRack.

Cheers,
Birger

My ML500 came with Continentals. Had them on my 02 ML and found them to be very good in winter weather. Also have them on my 4matic 05 E Class, same opinion there.

I have the same set of tires and they are actually summer tires and shouldn't really be used in the snow. You should probably at least get a set of all season tires, if not snow tires. I just looked at www.tirerack.com and they have a little bit of a selection, looks like the Kumho's are the best value from the reviews.

The Bridgestones are mediocre, and since they are "summer tires." they are definitely not suitable for the snow. I'll second Birger's recommendation. I got Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snows, which I'm putting on Friday. I liked them on my W163, so I got the 255/50-19s for this car. Tire Rack has them. They're pretty well rated by customers on that site, too.

I plan on keeping them on the stock rims and getting wider summer tires and wheels next spring.

I don't think Continetal has 19s in all-season or snow tires for our car (assuming he wants to use his stock wheels).

Just got off the phone with the tirerack. I ended up getting Bridgestone Blizzaks in a 235 60 18 along with rims which the tirerack had made for these vehicles(looks very similar to the stock rims). I've had Blizzaks before on a Lexus car I used to own and liked them a lot. The new size should also help a little. Price for the four tires, rims, lug nuts, balancing and shipping was $60 more than the local Sears wanted for just Pirelli Scorpions.
I let you know how it goes after the next snow.

Those should work well. They'll look a little skinny, but skinny is good when it comes to snow performance. I just mounted 255/50-19 Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snows on my stock 19s.
