ML Options – Questions...

Hello all,
Well it looks as though I'll be ordering an ML350 next month. I've got a test-drive sceduled next week – but i'm pretty sure I'll like it

I do have a few questions regarding some of the available options. Since I'm in Germany the options list is slightly different, plus most aren't put into 'packages', but available all individually.

Anyways, first on my list is the AMG look package – but the 7K one that includes the 20" wheels and the flared wheel arches. (Not sure if this is avail. in the US?) So basically the car will look identical to the AMG version bar the quad exhausts.... which brings me to my question; is it possible to get the AMG quad exhaust mounted on the 350? Will it adversely affect the engine?

Next I wanted to get the interior sports package with the Leather/Alcantara sports-seats and contrast stitching. However, I am curious about the comfort seats that are avail. with the heating and cooling option. Has anyone tried them out or have them? How does the seat cooling work? Is it worth it?

Next question is in regards to the Distronic. Is this the same system as in the S-Class? If not how does it differ?

Well that's all for now. Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers,
Andrea

Chrome Package – HELP!

Firstly, kinda sad no one answered any of my above-posted questions. What up?

Secondly, I went ahead and ordered the ML350 on Tuesday.
Was able to get the last car to be delivered this year – Dec 15/20th in Germany – so my dealer says.

Problem is that my dealer screwed up the configuartion (and I didn't catch it) and accidentally deleted the very important Chrome Package! (oh and also the heated steering wheel – but I could live without it) Well, called him yesterday to add it back on and he calls me today saying that the car has entered the assembly system or whatever and the configuration can't be changed. This is even though the car won't be actually built for another month at least!!! My dealer says he's tried everything, but there must be something someone can do?? Any suggestions?

Worse come to worse can the Chrome Package be added after the car is built. It would include the strips on the grill, along the doors and also on the door-handles as well as the exhaust tips.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Thanks.

Im pretty sure that it could be added afterwords. Maybe even at the MB dealer. It shouldn't be a problem. O and not alot of people come to the ML side therefore you didn't really get any responses!

I'm not sure if the wheel/tire size for the AMG package is the same as for the AMG 63. The latter may be wider. The US AMG look package comes with 19" wheels, not 20s. It's a pretty expensive package for what you get. I would have ordered it on my '06, but in the US you could not also get the sporty interior with the AMG exterior (stupid).

The exhaust tips can likely be changed to a quad style, though I don't know if the AMG Package valance will accomodate them.

The US Sport seat package has Alcantara inserts combined with MBTex, not real leather. There is no cooling option here that I am aware of. I have experienced the one that Saab has, and it is quite nice. It usually requires a perforated insert though--don't think it works with Alcantara.

The Distronic is the same or very similar to the S-Class, AFAIK. Here is MBUSA's description: "Distronic adaptive cruise control is the world's first adaptive cruise control system. A radar sensor in the grille can pinpoint the location of a moving vehicle ahead of you. Distronic can automatically adjust the throttle — and even apply up to 20 percent of the vehicle's braking power — to help you maintain the following distance you've selected."

I would highly recommend the Airmatic suspension. Be sure you try it.

Actually in Germany there are 2 AMG packages – one is the same you get in the US with the 19" wheels – the other makes it identical to the ML63 with the 20" wheels and also the flared wheels arches. Only difference of course are the quad pipes.
I went ahead last week and placed my order aftre having driven 2 ML's (same day – 2 hours each) one with airmatic – the other without. Amongst other things I drove my daily home to office route and really felt a difference in hard cornering with the airmatic of course proving more controlled with less body roll. I actually drove the non-airmatic as the 2nd car and I took a corner that I usually take quite fast and was a bit scared when the car didn't really respond too well and started to tip quite drammatically. It was no problem with the airmatic-equipped ML, however just an interesting observation. Also, I drove it over a cobble-stoned street here in Berlin with Sport and Comfort setting but didn't really notice any difference...mmm?
I did also opt for the Sports Seats – Alcantara and MBtex – as I found them more comfy than the multi-countour seats (a difference my test cars had). Also I think the look is better.
Anyways, my dealer called again yesterday saying that the factory is having "technical difficulties" with the infrared glass for the ML an if I want it (whoch I did) my order will be delayed until Jan. Damn –*so I took it off my options.
Let's see what happens next – generally not too impressed with my first Benz purchase so far – maybe I shoulda gotten that Range Rover Sport after all

I don't understand why there could be a problem with the glass. Saab has had infrared glass for years. Also, my ML will not have all three mirrors with auto dimming, wide angle passenger mirror with two sections and no blind spot, cooled front seats, front and back heated seats (standard, not some expensive extra), no radio preset scanning from the steering wheel (even our minivan has that), no perforated sports seats, no standard Onstar with hands free calling, etc. What is unsettling is that there are plenty of less expensive vehicle with more feature content.

I agree Cog, P1 package's exclusion of those basic features is ridiculous. having to pay $3000 more dollars to get auto-dimming mirrors that Chevy probably puts in standard in a Saturn is ridiculous...

A little update on my saga. Dealer called me today saying that factory will now add chrome-package and heated steering wheel back onto my options! Woohoo. Very happy about this – although still technical difficulties with IR glass so that is out. Let's see if it all turns out correctly now

Hi Meta,

Do you work for an oil company? I am surprised you are not ordering a Diesel!! Just kidding...

The heated and cooled seats are definitely something to get. I have them in my ML320CDI and they make life much better. The cooling function is very good in the 40-45 degree (plus humidity) Sicilian summer.

The cooling function works with fans blowing cooled air through the perforations in the seats, the same way it works in the S-Class and other MB cars. In a hot climate, it provides comfort a little faster than the AC can. If you have a climate control challenged partner, it also makes for more pleasant travel and fewer arguments. For me, it is great because I can stay cool, my wife can stay warm, so we are both happly. But, my wife will use Air Conditioning and the seat heat function at the same time, so who knows?

The Distronic is a nice novelty. I have it but seldom use it due to mostly city driving.

To add anything chrome or quad-exhaust tips, D&W may have something, or you could go up to Bottrop to Brabus.

Have fun!
Eric
