7.2-7.3 km/L. You're lucky if you manage to average more than that. I've put 13.000km on mine and the only time more I got more than that, was on my holiday where I drove on a motorway/highway with an average speed of 80-90 km/h
(8.4 km/L). Don't expect to get more, people who claim otherwise are either not telling the truth or they drive like a granny..
The official average factory fuel consumption value of 10.4 km/L is bull****

ML 280 cdi W 164
Hi ,

I'm driving a ML 280 cdi (same engine as 320 cdi) for 5 weeks now. Already have 7000 km (4350 miles).

I'm getting an average of 9.5 liters per 100 km (27mpg ?) when driving a mix of normal roads (max speed allowed 90 km per hour ) and highway (max speed 120 km/h). This is according to the on board computer and verified when I fill up the tank. Also the cruise control is always used when on highway.

When driving in a more sporty way i'm getting an average of 10,7 liters per 100 km.

Had my 320CDI for 11 months now. Highway driving of more than an hour or two average somewhere between 9.2 and 9.7 L/100km. Around town I can get as high as 14-15L/100km as I have a lead foot. My wife does significantly better.

You might be interested to know that the quality of diesel makes an enormous difference to fuel efficiency. After about 3 months of ownership my average consumption spiked up into the 17's and I took it into the dealer. They came to the conclusion that I had filled up with a bad batch of diesel and my woes would pass after my next refill. Well that turned out to be exactly the case.

Try another source for your fuel.

2007 ML320 CDI
930 total miles on my CDI that is 2 weeks old, it is on its second tank of diesel, and has 25.2 mpg and 255 miles since last reset. A lot of the roads the family travels on have speed limits of 50 mph or greater. I haven't had a chance yet to do a real calculation avoiding the computer's calculation.

Just picked up Ml320 CDI on Saturday...

We sold our 2003 ML350 a week ago and the CDI is so much nicer.
While driving on highway I reset the milage on the computer and about 10 mi later it was averaging 29 mpg at 60 mi/h with two peple in it. Now that is sweet! And acceleration, the ride comfort was amaizing!!!

ML 320 CDI and 300 SL
25000 km

25000 km, one big gap with the steering, all ok now, till last monday morning, when I was badly hit by a BMW convertible.... , repair will cost around 12'000 $ (or 15'000.- CHF) and all will be good again, so I hope, for the car, for me, repair will cost some bucks more 'cause of whiplash...

About my fuel consumption experience

In town, i work in a very rumorous town, lots of traffic and stop-lights, the computer says 11-12 litres/100 km average. In highway from 80 kmh-150 kmh the computer says 9-10.7 litres/100 km. Over that speed I did not drive becouse car is new and i was afraid of causing any problem but also it has become difficult, many autovelox and police radars already hunting for you!

I am sadisfied with these figures though, I can not expect a heavy car like this (ML 320 CDI), with clima, cd, rear seat entertainment, 4 people in it usually, in low quality asphalt and sometimes also low quality diesel (one can see the change of the quality of asphalt when driving on France's highways! for example), to consume less then this.

Afterall, the diesel in my country costs from 0.821 Euro to 921 Euro and a fill I did today for example of around 86 litres costed me around 73 Euros which is quite affordable and logical for a car like this which will make for me arond 700-800-900 km with this diesel depending how i drive.

It is a complete different world compared with the benzine, which costs more, much more, and the car consumes more, much more, and the autonomy of one fill is almoust half of that of the diesel!

Who wants less consumption should buy a Citroen C1 or 2 or any other minuscle german car! MB ML scope is SAFETY/COMFORT/SILENCIOSITY/POWER/A SENSE OF LUXURY AMBIENCE/SPACE/LONG TRIP ASSISTANT/ALL ROAD ABILITY!

Im getting around 22MPG on my commute to work. But if i go for a drive, taking the dog to a nice plantation or beach im able to reach 28mpg!

Coming from a E60 M5 that did a whopping 12mpg on my commute or 16mpg if i was lucky when going for a decent run its quite a revelation to me!

Its getting worse.. have done almost 15.000km now, average fuel consumption is 14.6L per 100km = 6.8km/L. I admit that I have a heavy right foot sometimes and mostly I drive arround the city but this is just too much. MB ought to be more honest with their specs.

I like this Car more and more

It must be your right foot my friend. This is a heavy car, 2100 kg without the driver, 4-matic, it is physically imposible for this kind of car to burn less fuel. Especially when one like you drives it with the desire of driving a porsche. You can buy a Lotus that weights 1/4-th of the ML and satisfy your driving style and at the same time burn less fuel. You can not have both - a great SUV, a heavy, high from ground and secure car, a comfortable and spacious one and on the other hand a car that burns little fuel. This is utopia!

I have done around 8000 km with my ML, not a single problem (touching metal), fantastic ride, very smooth and i am enjoying the light foot driving as this gives more class to this car, make you feel in a grand limousine, helps the passengers to absorbe better side-moves, enjoy the loads of music (around 800 songs in the 6-cd/mp3!!) and at same time, when allowed and when the right moment exceeding 170 km/hour without compromising the phylososphy of this car. Winter is coming, snow is expected, and the value of this car is yet to be revealed.

I am 100% percent satisfied with this ML and also agree with it's average 11.2 l/100 km of this first 8000 km i have cruised.

Greetings to all of you

That's not too bad. You are not in USA, right??
Different driving style.
Right now I'm driving my inlaws subaru with a small 115hp 2.0 engine and manual box. 15L/100km that's what I get arounf town.
You driving a truck which weighs a lot more, has two times more power and 3-4 times more torque and yoy getting the same fuel economy, although yours is a diesel - but if it was 320 you'd get about 18-20l/100km - that's here.

USA driving is much more relaxed. I was getting 13-14l per 100km, on my E55 with heavy foot.
Light foot 10-11l/100km easy.

Quality of gas and diesel plays very important role too.

I get 9.8L/100km in my ML320 CDI. Its hard to make less than that. City is between 13-14L/100km. Thats pretty good comparing to my friends Jeep Grand Cherokee, poor guy is averaging 22L/100km which is like 8MPG.

I am very pleased with the car, Its actually the best car that I have ever had I guess the downside of living and driving in the city with traffic signals at almost every 500 meters, is this high fuel consumption. I can live with that, especially compared with my friends '06 ML350. He by the way has the same driving pattern as me and he does not average more than 21-22L per 100 km!

Just last night I took care of a Q7 3.0TDI, believe me the driver of that car was crying after being smoked three times in a row and he gave up after we hit the next traffic light

'03 G500, '13 G63, '17 GLS63,
Just came back from a road trip, 430 miles each way. Averaging about 90 mph on the highway, the ML320 CDI did 22-23 mpg (US gallons). I'm a little disappointed, but considering the size of the vehicle and mpg's in the 20's I can't complain. As for the drive, I must say, its in its element at over 90 mph. The torque of the car really shines in top-gear passing acceleration.

Try it up through 220 km/h next time when you are on the Autobahn.

Rgards from good old Germany.
