ok.. i must be retarded... but why is the dipstick NOT a dipstick
i went to check the oil level today, and what i thought was the dipstick was just a red stick with a little *** on it.. how do you tell the oil level on this thing???
also, can i use any synthetic oil in the ML500... i don't feel like spend $400 for a Service D oil change... just want to take it to my Indy and have the oil changed.

my 06 ml500 has red cap also. you must have a electronic readout look in manual. use mobil1 synthetic oil. suck it out of the dipstick tube and replace w/ filter. simple to do your self.

the only person who's changed the oil on my car has been the $tealer. is it a broken dipstick or is it something else?? how do i approach the dealer if it's a broken dipstick??

ML500 AMG pkg
I have an 06 ML 500 and there is no dipstick just a plug. After reaching proper engine temp (80c or above), turn off vehicle on level ground for about 5 min, select mileage display on cluster, then thum down until you reach screen which states "measure oil now", select yes and it will tell you if low/high or OK. The 113 engine takes 8.5 quarts of oil with filter exchange.

ML500 AMG pkg
MB did a poll and found out that the majority of MB owners never check oil level so that was a cost saving for them but a headache to us!!! Even the dealer techs can't get oil levels correct when then car goes in for routine service. The techs use a computer that reads the oil level in mm (wish I had one).
