2007 ML320 CDI
Angry ML320 CDI Just Quit!!!!

We just got a 2007 ML320 CDI. The family and I were driving home from Denver when it lost power and then died. It would restart for a couple seconds and then conk out again. After a couple tries it wouldn't start at all. I had it towed back to the house and hooked up the scanner to it. I got the following codes:
P0100
P1100
P1111
P0111
P0087
I'm a newbie here, but I know how many experts lurk around these boards. If anyone can help me out on this one I will to you. Thanks!

Clay

Would it start after it cooled down? There is a Safety Recall to replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Do you know if that's been done to this truck?

Nope and I don't know. its sitting in the driveway now and two days later it still won't start. I read several posts about the crank sensor thingy, but since we've only had the truck a month I don't know what has been replaced. I'm trying to get the service history from the original owner's dealer.

Probably not the CPS, then. Depending on the miles, it should still be under warranty. Let the dealer do the job.

Sounds like the fuel pumps. MB replaced mine after two failures, the first one they replaced the fuel distro unit, then the second time the pumps. Both of my failures occurred on warm days with the temp over 79 degrees.

I thought about that, but when you turn on the ignition you can hear both pumps and fuel is getting INTO the filter, but I'm not sure how well its getting out. Too bad I can't crack it open and check the element... Oh, the truck has 26K on the ODO.

Why in the world would you have the truck sitting on the driveway after two days? Who cares what the prior owner or the codes say. The truck is under warranty. Have the dealer tow it, get a loaner, and be done!

Because I'm out of town and I don't want some tow truck ape dragging my $50K car around without my supervision.

Get the dealer to recommend the tow truck--Mercedes is paying for it in any event.

Not all blue collar folks are incompetent.

Plus, they're motivated to not lose the dealership's business.

I get that... I'm a green collar man myself. I'll contact the dealer.

All that aside, anybody have a clue what those trouble codes mean?

Roadside Assistance should have you covered, tow and all, for a trip interruption, which you should also be covered for... ANY MB Dealer can run the service records if they have the VIN, it's an MB wide database...

I just found out that the P0087 TC is for low fuel rail pressure. I'm thinking fuel filter or one of the pumps. Tejas, you may be onto something...

You may have a bad common rail. There has been an issue with these on some 2007 models. I have a friend with a R320cdi who had the same problem and had to have a common rail replaced. You need to get Roadside assistance to pick up your benz. they will cover everything.

Sounds like bad fuel or the vehicle never got its fuel filter changed. Diesels are suppose to have fuel filter changed on a regular basis due to the risk of water contamination.

I hacked the old fuel filter open and from the looks of it there is NO WAY it was ever changed. I bought the car with 24,500 miles on it. I've put 1,500 on it and it dies... Suffice it to say, Clay is a bit miffed about this.

24,500 is not old for a fuel filter. There is a built in sensor in it that will let you know if the trapped water is too high; and there is a bleed port to get rid of excess water.

Did the new filter solve your problem?

I have a VW TDI as well as my GL320CDI. VW on their service program replaces diesel fuel filters every two years.

I just sold my Jetta TDI and the fuel filter was to be replaced every 20K miles. Although many Jetta TDI owners will tell you this is too long.

Dutch: Doesn't seem like the new filter made a difference. The truck went into the dealer yesterday morning and we haven't heard any word back from them yet. Stay tuned Sports Fans!

Update:
The dealer here in Colorado Springs says that the pressure out of the injector pump is about 10% of what it should be. They are getting about 120-150 psi when it should provide about 1200 psi. At this point the service manager tells me it could be a clog in the pump or the pump is just bad. The cause of failure has yet to be determined, but at least we're making progress.

Hey Doc,
The injector pump died. Also, the fuel they took from the filter for a test. They suspect contaminated fuel. That kinda sucks because if it is bad fuel the warranty won't cover it and I'll have no recourse. Any thoughts?
