ML 320 Real World Gas Mileage?

We were out at the MB dealership last weekend and the sales guy was talking about getting 1200km (745 miles) per tank but when I read the brochure it was only quoting 900km (560 miles)? So my question is what are you actually seeing per tank in the real world? Thanks!

After being broken in my last 7 or 8 tanks have all taken me 1000kms between fillups. My driving is perhaps 30% city and the rest highway with my speeds being a min of 110 km/hr and several short bursts up to 180 for passing. I suppose that if i was to take a highway trip and stay at 100k/hr I could get close to 11 or perhaps 1150kms but there is no way i( or any other benz owner) would ever drive like that. I am happy with 1000kms between fillups

Misc driving- 19 to 22 mpg. Mostly freeway- 26 to 28 mpg -- Do not believe those "40 mpg" stories. It would possible if it was mostly downhill or being towed.

Thank you everyone for your replies, I appreciate it.

I'm not really concerned about gas mileage, I'm more concerned about the ability to travel long distances without refilling. There is the potential up here of not having easy access to the necessary diesel when travelling.

A progression to my original question...is there a significant performance difference between premium diesel (something that I am totally unfamiliar with) and regular diesel?

We were very impressed with the vehicle overall in appearance (only saw it in the showroom) and think they made great strides since the previous model. We test drove the ML 320 (I think?) before we got the RX, and were very dissappointed with the interior. The new one was a huge step forward and the reason why we are considering it again. Can't wait to test drive it!

Hope I can offer some insight. I have 37500 miles on my 2007 ML 320CDI. After the first 8000 miles or so the mileage improved to around 26 highway. At 15000 miles, I was nearing 29MPG in the summer time. Today I had a 230 mile trip and averaged 28MPG with outside temps at +15F driving 65 to 70 MPH. My best MPG with very efficient highway driving is 32.1MPG.

As for range, no worries there. I fill up to the brim, usually 26.5 US gallons, and by half tank, I am at 400 miles. I will then drive to at least 700 miles before the fuel light turns on. The farthest I have ever driven is 752 miles on a tank of fuel, but honestly I was very nervous. There is also a 3+ gallon reserve, but I personally have no desire to test that. 26 gallons, 700 miles per tank is just fine for me. (27 MPG in a 4X4 SUV!!)

As for fuel location, as long as there are truckers near your commute route, you will have ample access to fuel.

Enjoy the new ride when it arrives.

Here in Europe, all the brands that use high pressure diesel engines, suggest that we should only use premium diesel, not only because of performance but because premium diesel is cleaner than regular. There were a lot of problems with injectors (not only with mercedes) because the use of regular diesel. Anyway, here in in Portugal I do prefer to use premium diesel, because it justifies the diference in price for performance, and if Mercedes say to only use it, there must be more reasons. In Canada ML´s come with a sticker below the lights switch saying to only use premium.

Thanks...didn't they base a Seinfeld episode on your story.

We haven't made our decision yet, we still want to see the new X6 (even though it isn't "green") and the new RXh when it comes out in a couple of months...but we were very impressed with the Benz.

Hmm...now I'm going to have to look around. I've never seen premium diesel out here? Going to have to see if that's an issue.

My wife's 08 ML320CDI is averaging 24.6 with 60% highway/ 40% city but we also live at high elevation ( thin air) in Colorado and drive up and down Pikes Peak every day... I've reset the MPG-ometer several times hoping to see some improvements but it always comes back to 24.6 after a few days... My local Service Manager told me to drive it for a tankful like I hate it after I told him we've been babying it for the first few thousand miles... Haven't had the chance to do that because it's my wife's daily driver, not mine... It's got about 7000 miles on it so potentially not completely broken in yet...

SDUNHAM, your on track. Wait till you get to about 13-15K miles, then you will start to see the 28-30s for your MPG on a regular basis.

I'm curious to see if there is a noticeable difference in the fuel economy between those equipped with 17", 18"(not sure if 18" size was factory) and 19" tires. Mine has the AMG package 19's and I am almost positive they are the reason I never see anywhere near 30mpg, although I can average about 27-28 mpg on the highway with a light foot.
