Merc all-season mats stink, what's better?

I got a set of the Mercedes all-season mats (Black, thanks to advice in this forum). The fronts are fine, but the backs are pathetic.

The all-season mats on the W163 are worlds better. They are carefully shaped to cover the carpet from the door sill all the way to the center tunnel, and are fitted around the various features of the floor (and even hvae a nice logo). The W164 mats are barely more than little rectangles, leaving lots of carpet exposed fto grind winter grime.

Anyone have a recommendation for a decent set of all-season mats? I looked at the Mercedes floor liners, but didn't like the hard and plasticky material.

Thanks

Want the Best?

Go with Cocoa Mats:

http://cocomats.com/

They hold dirt and slop like no others; and keep your feet dry while doing it.

The cocomats have a full rubber bottom. As made, they're like a shallow liner with the cocoa fiber on top. They fully protect your "carpeting" (the carpets are really flocked plastic sheets) from dirt and/or liquid.

In just got a complete set of Weathertech fitted liners. These are the ones with the deep sides so they'll hold a pretty big spill. The cargo mat is great, and the rear mats fit/protect far better than the Mercedes all-season. They cover all the 2nd row carpet except the highest part of the center tunnel. After only 2 days, it's amazing how much crud they've collected (2 primary school children + New England winters = salt/mud/slush/sand/etc.) The only change I'll make is to add a strip of velcro to the bottoms so they are a little better anchored in place.

If you need that covered as well you should go with Weathertech's digital-fit series.

Angry old vs. new

Sorry to dredge up an old post but...

The current W164 All Season Mats really suck compared to the old W163 All Season Mats. The old ones were blacker, thicker/heavier duty, and most importantly they fit so much better compared to these new ones. Its like MB avoided the precision needed for a good fit by instead opting for a wide margin of unprotected carpet around the edges. And don't even get me started on the pathetic little squares for the back seats...

Bah humbug!

Get a set of Cocomats.com mats. They are 110% and fit perfectly. In fact, depending on what color you want, I have a front pair of lightly used mats that I'll let go for a very low price. PM or email me, if interested.

Mercedes-Benz sells all-weather floor trays as well as the all-season floor mats. The trays may be worth a look if the mats are insufficient.

+1..! do a little homework.. how hard is it to find a good solution, when you have an actual factory option available. and for those recommending weathertech, it might interest you to know that the liners are actually MADE by weathertech. the ONLY bad thing i have to say about them is they don't cover the dead pedal, which is stupid and annoying

-1 on that statement, if it was directed at me. My homework was 10 years of being satisfied with the previous factory all-season mats and expected at least the same from MB this time around. People buying the liners are complaining that they still don't fit 100%, slide a little, and their feet get caught on the lip upon entry/exit, so it seemed like a no-brainer to pay for the premium MB all-season mats again.

Where did you hear that? My salesman gave me a set of Mercedes rubber mats when I bought the vehicle. They suck, serving mainly to hold dirty melted slush under the mats, thus keeping the carpet wet all the time. So I bought WeatherTech liners. They fit absolutely perfectly, don't slide around at all -- they have indents where the Mercedes 'poppers' are located on the floor -- and nobody has ever caught a foot on them at entry or exit.

My only complaint is that, as has been said already, they don't fully cover the dead pedal.

I don't think it matters whether they say "WeatherTech" or "Mercedes" on the side, they are the same thing.

I bought my ML and it came with both carpet and MB/WeatherTech mats. The tray mats work nice in the front. The rears are 2 piece and slide a bit. On the WeatherTech site it looks like there rear mat is one solid piece which would also cover the middle carpet hump? Is this true? If so I may spring for some rears.

This thread is LOL!

The MB all-weather mats are a joke however you want to justify it. We picked up Michelin mats at Costco for about $40. Match perfectly (our interior is black), fit perfectly, and are extremely functional even in our slush filled winter/springs.

I guess black will match anything. Perfect fit is unlikely from Costco but if you see it that way then enjoy them

i'm curious where you heard that as well. i recall doing my own research on buying mats vs liners and never heard anything of the sort, nor experienced it having bought them since. at any rate, why take anyone's word for it? just try them out. do a test fit at the dealership. they fit like a glove. and i don't know what you mean by premium mats (as opposed to carpets, i guess?) but the liners cost more.

i don't think ppl in this thread are making much of a distinction between the mats and the liners. the liners are one piece, which does cover the middle part. and again, the weathertech liners and the MB ones identical, except for branding.

Found the complaints - 1 about sliding and 1 about catching foot on the lip - on either this message board or "the other one". Honestly, my previous excellent experience with the mats in my W163 carried far more weight than the odd incongruous complaint about the liners.

Now, more importantly, what do people have against Costco? Their quality is normally good - it has to be otherwise people just take it back!

seems odd to me to lend so much weight to experience with an older generation of a vehicle -- a new gen car is barely the same vehicle at all, and every model is different from every other model, in so many different ways, regardless of manufacturer.

i got nothing against costco. love their chocolate cake. but generic mats and pine tree air fresheners belong in a ford explorer. it's not a question of if it "works"

Incongruous mats ...

"Incongruous" better go check the dictionary.

I think my comments are perfectly relevant re both the poor coverage of the new W164 MB mats as well as the poor design of the Weathertech rear floor liners. If things like leaving the section between the brake and dead-pedal uncovered is acceptable in a winter mat, then my opinions may be different from yours, but I don't think it's incongruous for a product that's supposed to protect your carpets (but doesn't).

And, I've been using OEM and Weathertech mats for a very very long time on all our BMW and Mercedes vehicles. But, I won't buy Weathertech again for the rear row (where I need it the most ... kids with muddy boots) unless they fix their design issues.

I'm not disagreeing with you. Incongruous in the context that the vast majority of accounts were that the mats/liners where perfect, whilst just one or two people pointed out some some things they were unhappy with. Like you I based my buying decision on experience, reputation and the assumption that Mercedes' products IMPROVE year over year!

My experience with my older generation of vehicle/mats was GOOD and I still have to ignore it? The marketing/brand guys from MB will want a word with you.
