Question ML UV windshield (like GL550 and S-class windshields)...need your help

Hey guys, I've been MIA for a while..been very busy.

My 08 ML350 windshield got cracked today and I'm going to need to replace it since its a pretty long crack. I want to replace it with the UV windshield (looks purpleish) that was an option on 07-08 ML's I believe as part of the P03 package and is the same look as the ones that come on the GL550 and S-classes

...anyone know how I can get a part number for this on the ML? I called the dealer and they said they'd need a part number or a VIN of a car with this windshield in order to look it up

basically I want to replace my winshield with the UV/dual pane/purpleish looking windshield but cant find the right part number or VIN of a car with it

Have you tried a reputable auto glass store? They often have access to exactly the same windshields as the manufacturer, just without the three-pointed star on it.

^ You make a good point, I was quoted $672 + install by the MB dealer for a replacement of the same windshield (this is with a 15% discount)...is that a good price?

Would a reputable auto glass store have access to a UV windhshield (aka the one I actually want)

That's not a Mercedes part number.

Find part numbers here: http://epc.startekinfo.com

you can use my vin off my lemon'd 2007 ml500 w/ the p3 package. 4JGBB75E47A271904

forgot to mention, depending on your garage door opener, you may experience some shortened range issues with the ir glass. we have a craftsman opener, and noticed the range is considerably shorter than our other mb's without ir glass.

If your ML is like mine it has a blue tinted windshield that matches the side windows in the front. I do not think I have the IR windshield and have never heard of it on the ML. Be careful what you buy as many aftermarket types mess up the rain and other sensors that read thru it. I would stay with the MB windshield as supplied by a dealer.

That's why I said "reputable" auto glass store.

I have had three BMW windshields replaced by Speedy Auto Glass with no problems at all including rain sensor operation. (540, X5, and M3 Cab.) They are typically about 60% of the BMW dealer price and do the job in one day instead of overnight. In each case the replacement windshield was EXACTLY the same PPG glass as OEM, but without the BMW logo.

Avoid cheap places that use Chinese glass.

Thanks for the help guys, REALLY appreciate it...

MB211 thanks for the part number, I do have the blue front windows...do you think its a good idea going with this windshield rather than OEM blue that comes on the car?

SPDRACER I too have the craftsman opener, from your experience do you think the windshield was worth it even with few drawbacks?...and on that note, whats the best thing about the IR windhshield?...do they look very similar to the S550 IR windshields etc (havent seen one on an ML in a while which is why i ask)

the only real draw back was the shortened garage door range. there are 2 small square areas on the glass which does not have ir on them, one is near the top by the rear view mirror, and the other one is below in the center to allow things like fastrack responders to work.

i complained about the shortened range to the dealer who found there was a "repeater" fix to help with the issue. for the most part it did help extend the range by 2 car lengths. but it was still not as good as our mb's without the ir glass, which could open the garage door more than 8 car lenghts away.

the 09 gl550 i have now has the same ir glass, and although i know there is the repeater to help, i decided not to do it. mainly because the ml had damages to the a-pillar and rear view mirror housing. because in order to install the repeater the tech will have to remove the a-pillar, and some parts off the rear view mirror assembly, and open up the case holding the homelink buttons. although the dealer was apologized and replaced all the parts, (you might have better luck with someone who is more careful), i just don't want to deal with the possible damaged parts again for minimal gains.

not sure how much of a benefit you will see since you will only have ir glass in the front, but in the old ml, all the glass was ir so the benefit i saw was lower interior temperatures which was a good thing since it was a black on black ml

when you ask me if the ir glass looks similar to the s550, are you just referring to the purplish tint/look on the glass at certain angles?

it seems that with your input im now on fence about going with the IR glass

yes my mentioning of the S550 glass was referring to that purplish tint look on the glass at certain angles

if it were me, and the price difference between your original and the ir was minimal , i'd just go for the ir glass.

and yea, with the ir glass you get that purplish tint at certain angles.

fyi, 2008 gl550's don't have this because ir glass wasn't offered for that model year.
