Depends... What you are promised going in to the sale doesn't always pan out.
A completely brand-new order seems to take about 3-4 months to work its way through the system. Give or take a couple of weeks.
Dealers have orders in the system for their own "dealer inventory" and also for customer orders. These orders can be modified in certain ways leading up to the production date, but become increasingly "firm" from a change-control perspective as the production date nears. When you're looking to buy a vehicle the salesperson will without doubt tell you all about how they can repurpose an existing order that is much closer to the prod date than a grass-roots order, and make it yours.
I've had disastrous experience with these promises in the past (to the extent that I got frustrated and cancelled after finding out my latest revised estimate was 5-6 months after ordering) and then this year I tried again with a different dealer and got my vehicle in less than 3 months spec'ed exactly the way I wanted it. Just over 2 months really.

2011 ML 550
I ordered a new 2011 ML550 today. Put $1000 deposit on it. They told me It would be delivered the first week in October (about 8 weeks). The vehicle was already in production and "only needed to have some specs changed." I was at another dealer earlier in the week who did not have any 2011 ML550s in production. He told me it would take 3-4 months for delivery.
...hope this helps

'11 ML350
my '11 ML350 was built 7/27, and arrived at my dealer 8/6 - only 10 days including a weekend!
Not sure of the precise time frame, but 4-5 weeks from the build date all build specs are frozen and no changes can be made. If motivated, a dealer can trade a build slot with another dealer that better meets your time frame.

Unfortunately, I called the MB dealership yesterday to ask a question about my 2011 ML550 in production and the sales manager told me, instead of the October 7th delivery date that was discussed when I purchased the vehicle, now it won't be delivered until "the third trimester in October." He said this meant anytime between the 21st through the 31st of October. I'm annoyed because I can't wait to drive it! It looks like the 8 weeks has now become 10-11 weeks.

Got it, 550s dont come through often and so that makes them easier to spot. I see a sea of 350s everyday so they are something I cannot pickout as easily.

What vehicle did you order though? I was told that ML 350 and 450 take a lot less time because each dealership has many more "production spots" allocated. A dealer might only have one or two ML 550 production spots for an entire month....so it takes longer. If you ordered a ML550 and are getting it that quickly, I'm impressed...and jealous!
