ML350 owner for 1 month and this happens...which the dealer says
I bought my wife a 2011 ML350 about a month ago and had our first problem yesterday. When leaving work after a normal 8 hour work day she arrived at the vehicle, opened the rear driver side door, put her purse and lunch bag on the floor and closed the door. As the door closed, the rear hatch glass shattered. It seems as if the pressure was enough to blowout almost the entire window. I know it is unusual but having a flaw in glass does happen. I called my insurance company and they told me to first contact the dealer because it definitely sounded like a warranty issue. I called the MB of Tampa dealership where we purchased the vehicle and they said to go ahead and bring it in. Drive from work to dealer is only about 10 min, so no big deal. My wife arrives and they try to tell her that it looks like it got hit with a rock or stick and it would not be covered under warranty but they would at least check with MBUSA and see if there is a record of this happening on other ML350's, but it would still be a very slim chance. My jaw dropped when i heard this. I have been through many a windshield on a wide variety of vehicles and never have I seen anything like this. Notice how even the very bottom edge and the top left corner is all jagged and cracked. Still waiting for the final word but seriously, can they be for real?

I have not heard of that happening on the ML, but certainly possible, expecially with glued on glass. If your wife witnessed it happening as the hatch closed it is definitily not rock damage.

This is the first I have ever heard of this. As Greg said I guess it can happen but its certainly very rare. Have had 2 W164s and have never experienced anything like that. Glass could have been nickes or damaged at the factory and that could have been the cause. Could also have been defecive from manufacture.

I've never heard this happen on a Benz before. Check e90post.com because last summer the sun roof shatted on a lot of 3 series. Those guys can probaly give better help on how to proceed with this. Good luck and sorry to hear this happen to you.

That is exactly what I was saying. Good news though, I got a call from the dealership yesterday saying that this would be covered under warranty.
Not sure if it was them being generous or the fact that I emailed this same picture to a few people I know in the area. Now I just wait to pick it up.
