Gas Prices Here In The States
I'm sure all of you fellow Americans have felt the unfortunate impact of the constantly rising gas prices. Just figured I'd make a thread to compare the prices of each member's state & City/Town.
I'm in SoCal and it has gotten stupid expensive:
91 - Shell - $4.73/Gallon
Saw a couple spots near Hollywood last weekend that were charging $5.09/gallon for 91!
Filled the tank YESTERDAY and it cost me $120 even. This is nuts!
Before someone goes off ranting about how if you own a Mercedes you shouldn't care how much gas costs or how efficient your car is, understand that it isn't the money solely, it's the principal. Spending $120/tank on fuel in a car that only goes 350 miles with that is pretty frustrating. Regardless of how much money someone may have, the fact that so much is going to something that not even 10 years ago was nearly half price is upsetting. Plus, people with money didn't make it by being stupid spenders, the dollar still has value to them.

On base here in Germany I filled up the tank on Friday @ $4.19 for 93 octane, off base ia a different story, its about about 6.50 to almost 7.00 euro a gallon which comes out to almost $10.00.

Yea is sucks, but I felt that way when gas here went over .75. OMG I'm old.
4.98 on Friday, in Tahoe City, 4.05 at Costco in Reno. I'll drive the 70 mile round trip for that. (12.00 in fuel to save 10.00 over all).

^^Those were the days. My father says when he was in his 20s, gas in the states was $.25/gallon.
I need a time machine and a fuel tanker. lol

One man's meat is another man's poison -- and vice versa. The higher gasoline prices go, the better my local economy is and the better my business does, so while I sympathize with you guys and have to pay the same high prices myself, I also can't help feeling just a little yee-ha every time the cost of fuel goes up again.
I used to live on a boat in the Caribbean. Some of the megayachts used to (probably still do) drive all the way to Venezuela just to fill up with diesel because they hold so much fuel -- several thousand gallons, typically -- that the two-day drive each way is worth it for the savings. Donald Trump purchased Adnan Kashoggi's yacht and complained afterwards that it isn't often The Donald gets out-negotiated but he did in this case. "SOB delivered it with an empty tank," he said, "It cost me $25,000 to fill up." And that was 20 years ago...

I'm guessing it's either transportation or fuel based(i.e. gas station).
You lived on a boat in the Caribbean? That's awesome! I hope it was on a megayacht lol.
Try a 747 with an empty tank, crap costs $400,000 to fill up! Best part is, it will only go for a 17-18hr flight before needing refueling.

Average gallon of gas in the states is over $4 again and almost $10 in EU. Can anyone with commodities experience explain the volatility in the price over the past five years?

I like that graph you have there, where did you find it? In 08 gas was over $11.00 at some gas stations also you need to consider the weaker dollar-Euro exchange rate.

If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living?

I used to own a software company. After we sold it we bought a 45-foot sailboat and lived on that in the Caribbean for a few years. Not too strenuous a lifestyle, I admit, but I did actually start to get bored with palm trees and sandy beaches, and I found myself dreaming longingly of blizzards and snow so we packed it in and came back here. We are considering retiring again and are building a house on some lakefront property we own in the Okanagan Valley, one of Canada's prettiest areas and with a surprisingly Mediterranean climate. Life is tough but we're strong.

My wife and I have a company that rents furnished offices to small business people and professionals -- "executive centers" in other words. We are in Calgary which is energy central in Canada, colloquially known as the oil patch. So although my business is not directly affected by oil prices, our local economy very much is. Oil prices up --> we rent more offices. Oil prices down --> people vacate our offices.

Funny how retirement goes. A friend retired to Costa Rica saying he was tire of how crowded the Lake was getting and he too was tired of the snow. He bought a house there, sold all his property here. He also was a life time bachelor. He lasted almost six months, packed up, moved to Los Angles, got married, bought a Harley got his SAG card and became an Old Tough Guy doing bit parts in the movies.
Me, I stayed here and do my contract work in TV broadcasting, and Automotive industry as a product consultant.
I only have 4 Emmys for my retirement efforts, and an old ML 500. But I wouldn't mind moving out of Snow Country.

Retirement is boring, especially if you're alone.

This weekend I traded my two CLK63 AMG V-8's for a Porsche 997TT Triptonic that gets 18and 23 mpg. My CLK's got a lot less. According to several salesmen a lot pf people are trading their V-8's for V-6's. Although I was interested in their S65 AMG I couldn't pull the trigger because these cars (V-12's) are now rapidly depreciating dinosaurs and do not make good daily drivers. IMO high gas prices (above $4.00/gal) are here to stay.

I think Porsches are a bit of a ripoff for a 70 year design that has nothing but LEDs now.
However, that S65 AMG, I could NEVER have said no to. Those are the class leaders in that segment, but I could see why you were concerned.
Most people buy an S65 and end up getting rid of it within the first year or two, because they realize what it truly costs to maintain and how impractical it could be.

To be honest, I'm a bit saddened by your decision there, but congratulations nonetheless.

I love the CL and S65 AMG's for what they represent but, as you very correctly point-out they are high maintenance cars that require a lot of potentially costly attention. There will always be limited market demand for them especially as they continue to rapidly depreciate as compared to other smaller and more fuel efficient vehicles. However, IMO the US auto owner is being "driven" by internal governmental forces and policies to reduce our dependence on foreign fossil fuels which is causing a wholesale change in the way the US consumer and automakers view our "fuel efficient" future.
