I had heard that the dealer has to install. Can anyone confirm? I am getting the "Active Headlamp Inoperable" message.

Are you talking about replacing the whole headlight assembly? Either way, yes, you can do it yourself. This only issue would be if you're replacing it with an assembly with different functions, in which you would have to have it coded by the dealer to activate/deactivate those features.

I am replacing it with another bi-xenon. I had heard that the dealer would have to install but I don't see why?

It all depends on your skill level. The only reason it would have to be done by the dealer is if there was programming necessary. However, if you're replacing with the same part then this won't be an issue. The headlamp assemblies don't have an individual ID that requires programming, only functionality. Ie, if you tried to switch a halogen for an HID, your HID wouldn't work properly until you have it programmed accordingly. This same with standard lights versus active curve lights.

Understand. My bi-xenons are the active ones (ones that move) and I am replacing with the same kind. Your logic makes sense though. Thanks, again.

why would you need to replace it if it's the same one? usually you can just replace the lamp or ballast if everything is functional. The headlights are actually a PITA to remove, there are a few tutorials on YouTube.

It sounds as though the OP has a failed active headlight motor, in which case he would have to pull out the whole assembly anyway.

That is correct marc hanna. I do have the dreaded "active headlights inoperable" error. Do you (or anyone) know of a different way to fix this other than replacing the whole headlight assembly? Or is that the only option?

Thanks, for all your help on this thus far.

It's probably simpler just to replace the whole assembly. Otherwise you're going to spend hours in surgery on this sucker with an uncertain outcome. If you have the leeway to have the car off the road for a few weeks while you tear it apart, determine the exact failure, and order parts, then certainly you will save some money. I suspect however, you want to have your car back up and running inside a day or so.
