2007 320CDi.SE auto transmission issues

I'm hoping someone can provide some much needed guidance for an auto transmission issue I'm facing with my ML 2007 model.

Recently, when driving in automatic mode, my gear changes have begun to play up. it appears to work perfectly some times and then other times I get issues.

When I do have the issues, this is what I observe. Again, in automatic mode, my gear changes seem to shift up slowly mean it takes me forever to get up to speed, and then when I slow down and come to a stop and then try to accelerate again, im usually left in an incorrect gear (usually in 5th gear). I then have to put the car into manual mode to shift the gears into the appropriate gear.

it's strange because, I can put the car in manual mode and shift up and down the gears perfectly. I have tried to do a reset of my automatic transmission and this has not resolved the problem.

I'm hoping someone can provide me with some solutions.

Thanks in advance.

Did you try to scan for codes ? Could be speed sensor bad on conductor plate. You can remove valve body and send your conductor plate for repairs at $269

I took the car to my local merc specialist and unfortunatley they could not replicate the faults when they test drove the car. They actually said the car was driving really well and there were no issues with engine or gearbox. They plugged in the diagnostic machine and it was returning no faults.

Given the car is nearly 10 years old, would upgrading the car software help ?

Hi. Following a diagnostic at Mercedes, they have informed me that I need to replace my turbo and both manifolds. the explanation given is that the loss of power is causing my gear shift problems not the other way round.

This is clearly a huge job and cost (£3.5k) but can anyone verify this and my options ? I originally went in thinking all I needed was a software upgrade to fix by gear shifting.

I would definitely get a second opinion from a good independent Mercedes repair facility.

If the intake manifolds are at fault there should have been a Check Engine Light at the least. Uncommon for the turbo to also be bad.

My engine management lights have started to appear and disappear since my first post. The car has started to judder when pressing the accelerator too and an evident loss of power.

Merc showed me the diagnostic test it showed that the 'diesel injection' test failed. The test also showed the 'electronic transmission control' passed the test ruling out the need to upgrade software I believe.

Whilst the turbo may solve the loss of power will it solve the original issue that I had which is the gears getting stuck in higher gears when in automatic mode and me having to manuall take over to drop into the right gears.

So, I wanted to provided everyone with an update.

I did get the turbo and manifold and motor replaced by Mercedes at roughly £3.5k and my car is running like a dream. it was a huge cost and I'll never truly know if I needed to replace all 3 components but this has fixed my car. The power is awesome and the gears are shifting through smoothly.

thanks for all the advice.
