2011 ML350 w/ 28,000 miles, Transmission Not Shifting & ABS ESP Warning lights on
I was injured and laid up in the hospital for 4 months during the winter. After I returned home and was finally able to get behind the wheel of my 2011 ML350, I found the battery completely dead.
My son and I replaced both batteries that were located under the front passenger seat and subsequently had to have the ML350 towed to my local Mercedes Benz dealership in Cherry Hill NJ due to several errors displayed on the dashboard.
We finally picked up my ML350 a week later, after the transmission module had to be flashed by the dealership's proprietary computer software and all errors were cleared the Mercedes Benz mechanics.
As I drove my ML350 the 14 miles home, everything was found to be operating flawlessly.
The next day I started the ML350 and a ABS ESP warning displayed, recommending that I refer to my owner's manual. When I attempted to drive the ML350, I found that the transmission failed to shift out of 1st gear, preventing me from traveling any faster than 25mph.
I've scheduled another appointment, but the earliest is 2 weeks away.
Does anyone have any idea what if anything could be wrong ?

You'll have to get a code reader that can make sense of MB codes. Something like an icarsoft MBII or an Autel 802 (I think). I've got the icarsoft one and it generally gives me enough of a clue to, at least, look in the right direction.
Get one and post back with results. Good luck!

I have seen problems caused by the battery in the front SAM module, which is located under the right front seat. When replacing the 2 batteries, was there no damage to SAM? Anyway, only with the error codes can we be sure.

I have the same problem
Were you able to determine the problem with your ML 350. I am getting the same issue with a ABS and ERS warning light. Won't shift out of 1st gear.

You must buy your own to read the codes in every module.

Well Thanks Dundee. I asked mraposo what his final diagnosis was and you point me to a scanner with a scolding about no two situations being the same. I have a similar issue with the same model and year with low mileage and asked how and if his had been resolved, seeking input from individuals with a similar issue. I thought that was what a forum is all about, exchanging ideas to assist each of us in making better decisions. What I get is a repeated unspecific reference to a scanner. No help and rather presumptuous. And sorry, the ERS was a typo and it should have been ESP.

Did you not see that the original poster only has one post, and that post was about his problem. He never responded to other posts and never told anyone what the result/fix was and he hasn't returned to the forum since July 15.
Because he had an ESP problem does not mean that your ESP problem is one in the same. The codes must be read in all modules to determine what the problem is.
And really, you felt you were scolded because I said " The original poster's problem has nothing to do with your problem". Grow up now before it's too late.

Wow, again what a friendly and welcoming board. Couldn't validate your hostility but then you decide to tell me to grow up. I don't post much on forums like this because of the treatment from professional lurkers that have to comment no matter if they have relevant input. If I had a scanner I would have used it and then given the statistics if I was seeking that information. I was just searching for a little information about a common symptom already posted on the board.

I too ping people for updates if they never posted a resolve or outcome. Forum people tend to get moody about posts they find redundant for some reason. I never understood that, but no worries! Keep us updated if you find out anything on your issue! As these W164’s age it’s bound to come up more!

Two times I noticed a problem caused by an dead battery, which leaked some kind of contaminant and oxidized the contacts of the SAM module, disrupting the operation of the ISM module.
The solution was to remove the SAM module and arrange a cleaning of the contacts. Anyway, only with the error codes can we be sure.

Look, he's just advising you to get a scanner that can read MB codes.
You can get ESP/ABS warnings from anything from a defective speed sensor to a water destroyed SAM module.
I've had them from a defective rear locking diff motor!
Without a scanner it's going to be firing a (very expensive) parts cannon at the thing, hoping for a hit.
So get one, get the codes read and post back with them and we'll try to help.
