Replaced right front seat belt; Now red "SRS" is illuminated on dash

Hey guys. The driver's side seatbelt on my ML320CDI came apart, so I ordered another one from ebay. After I replaced it, the "SRS" dash light is illuminated on the dash.

The part I ordered was used, so I'm thinking it was a bad part unless there is something in the dash that needs to be reset. I wouldn't have thought that this part would be something that needed resetting but this car has surprised me in the past.

Any ideas, or is it just a bad part?

Thanks for your help!!

On the manual it says after replacing the seat belt the fault code reading and clearing has to be performed. It will be cause there is a connector on the reel of the seat belt, when you disconnect it, the fault is registered.
You will need a scanner to clear the fault. Or you can try disconnecting the main battery, wait for some 10-15 minutes, reconnect it.

Okay, great! I'll try to clear it with my scanner. Hopefully it works.

Thank you!!!

If your scanner is unable to access the Emergency Tensioning Retractor module to read the codes and then delete them, the SRS light will continue.

Read #11 in the R&I PDF.

Yeah, my OBD scanner can’t see the faults. It’s showing no codes at all. So will I have to take it to a dealer now?

Will disconnecting the battery even be worth a shot?

Disconnecting the battery will not delete the problem.

A visit to a dealer will cost you more than owning your own scanner.

Thanks Dundee! The scanner I have is very low-end, so I'm not surprised it didn't work.

The one you suggested will? It looks more complicated, so I might have to ask again once I get it.

For information ...

Does simply disconnecting the unit create the code or is the code created by turning on ignition with unit disconnected?

I did this to myself by removing the middle seats—-which have built-in airbags—on my GL and can’t recall whether I turned on ignition during the operation.

Needless to say, the second time I installed a trailer controller harness, I just lifted the seats a little to run the harness across, not disconnecting any wiring.

Yes, simply disconnecting the seatbelt buckle will throw a code. I never turned on the ignition.

Please read the beginning of page 2 in the PDF. And it means that now you must delete any and all code/s that are stored in the SRS Cont. Module.

C230 Sport Coup + 2006 W164 ML350 + 99 Ford Escort (What the heck, it gets 38 mpg!)
Inexpensive iCarsoft Scanner will clear it. 90 bucks or so.

Some scanners won’t though, so do your homework. Mine wouldn’t.
