Considering 2011 ML550

Is this the correct forum for the 2011 ML 550? Can anyone tell me of their experiences with any service problems such as the front differential problems the 2006 M500 had? Thanks in advance.

The 2011 was a transition year from W164 to W166. Can you post your VIN? It can be decoded to identify exactly which vehicle you have.

Do you have a 2011 or a 2006?

I don't see front differential problems posted here often. I spend most time on this site in the W166/X166 sections.

I had a 2006 ml500. They had a factory defective bearing in the front differential that was well known. I am looking at a 2011 ml550 To replace my 2006 that the insurance company totaled. So the VIN is 4JGBB7CB5BA655465 for the 2011 Just wondering what forum to discuss on. Thanks for answering.

I am also looking for a 2010-2011 W164 and despite seeing these SUVs everywhere there is very little technical and DIY out there. I am guessing these are mostly bought by females which just buy it with a warranty or take it to the dealer. From what I understand the main issues for the later models are the rear SAM, power steering rack leaks, intake flap and rear hatch not closing electrically.

The engines and transmission seems bulletproof according to the C and E class people with the same powertrain.

I believe the rear SAM is more of an issue for 2007-09 model years. After that MB figured out where to attach the gaskets; meaning to the body, not the light fixtures themselves.

My 2006 leaked PS fluid also. I believe you’re right on the power train part. I learned a lot from the 06 M500. I bought a Cadillac SRX to replace it and I hate it. Nice car just small. I appreciate the response. Good luck. That car I gave the VIN on is in St Clair Shores, MI. Found on CarFax. Feel free to check it out. Be safe.

Yes they are good value for money. They have depreciated like crazy and you get lots for what you pay. If you compare it to a Toyota/Honda with similiar age/mileage it will usually cost 50%+ more. Seems due to people like Scotty Kilmer on youtube people are afraid to buy anything german.

way better vehicle than most out there. My 2006 was good to me. Only problems I had were my own fault other then the bearing I mentioned. I will have another.
