W164 many CAN codes and ESP

2006 ml320. V6 diesel, rhd.

Symptoms:

1. After about 300m of driving, ESP inactive, abs inactive, tire pressure mon inactive warnings on dash. This has happened about 5 times.

2. When pulling away this morning, would not accelerate. Reverse then drive and all good again. little power. Only happened once.

3. Sometimes the red warning "drive to dealership without shifting gear" comes up

4. Sometimes when driving away can feel slight pulsing like the car is testing the brakes. Just the slightest roughness.

5. Car voltage seems fine, but put charger on it and dodgy charger says 25% battery charge. Charged overnight regardless and the next day faults did not occur.

6. Steering column housing is solid, not broken.

My theories:

1. These symptoms point to wheel speed sensor(s), but there are no codes associated with those at all. Would not explain the Can codes.

2. Aftermarket trailer wiring was fitted about 12 months ago. Throws a dash error on right rear blinker occasionally . This could be affecting can bus. Disconnect and check, but odd now.

3. Low battery, and aux battery dear so ism throws faults.

4. A break in the can-bus somewhere?

5. A module is messing with the can-bus. But which one?
6. Can bus is grounded causing errors as battery drain

Codes:

C141 - CAN N73 N93

C126 - N80

With the number of codes you have, I think you may need a main battery replacement. How old is your current battery?

You may also have a faulty wheel speed sensor, but if you're not seeing a fault related to one or more, it is not likely. I would start with the battery.

I had a low battery and faulty wheel speed sensor at the same time, experienced similar symptoms (lots of unrelated codes, also had a code for the sensor).

Disconnecting modules in sequence found when the ISM was disconnected all the can bus codes went away. So the the ism appears to be it.

anyone know if the ism needs to be online coded, how much that is, can I do it with a Chinese sd connect???

You probably have a Parasitic Draw on the battery which is causing all of these codes. You must slow charge the main battery overnight to 12.7 volts and then while the car is not used, monitor the voltage to see if the it steadily drops below 12.7.

Sorry to bring up an old issue. Wonder if you share your final solution as I'm having the same problem. Thanks

yes I did fix it. I am not completely sure, but the wiring loom from the ism as it passes near the exhaust was a bit iffy. It was oil soaked and may have a suspect wire. Also not perfectly attached. I reattached and cleared codes and it was fine for the next few years before I sold the car.

I did follow the star procedure, checking resistance point to point and I think I found something up with the wiring loom.

I did isolate other can items from the can bus and was able to identify ism as the problem for my whole of can failure. Star was almost necessary for this and it took several resets of codes in the transmission before it was happy. Then zero problems, was like one code was causing another code needed to clear all several times to get it to hold.

good luck. Foot kick panels is where I did most of my can isolating.
