slight noise while steering

Hey guys,

I been out of town for work and unable to check this myself, my wife called me and mentioned she heard a slight noise from the steering wheel when rotating the wheel to her left. Can only really be heard if she has the music muted. I called my service advisor and he said he was able to replicate the noise on 2 other MLs on the lot.

Said it was part of the electric steering, anyone else noticed this on their MLs just curious. Not sure if its an issue or by design. If no one has heard it on theirs, probably will take it in when I get back.

Thanks!

Had similar question. Dealer replicated noise with a few other new ones. Associated with the clock spring. They said they don't think it's right and have notified MB.

Is the noise at the steering wheel or outside at the rack? I will pick up a 2012 c63 soon and I want to make sure this is not the norm for all vehicles with electric steering. What is a clock spring?

C63 doesn't have EPS. Its standard hydraulic.

Clock spring connects wheel controls to the rest of the vehicle. Basically a coil of wires, allowing the wheel to turn without severing the wires, from what I understand. They think it might just be because it is new and they are stiff.

Thanks for the feedback, sadly the car will need alot more work than just checking a "clock spring". A motorcyclsit tried to run a red a light and smacked into the back of my wifes new ML. Most importantly she and the baby are safe and okay.

Trunk and bumper damage, not looking forward to having this thing fixed.

Keep me posted please on the progress your dealer hears from MB.

I think the 2012 c63s have electic steering since the MCTwas going to have stop /start function but was nixed on the c63s . Electric steering remains however.

Since its so new, the techs weren't sure. They said it could work itself out. New one on lot did same. So, from what I have heard, it's happening to others and MB knows about it. Techs said they will probably issue a fix in some form.

I feel your pain. It's been over a month now and I am still waiting on a front bumper. Its suppose to arrive on 12/23.

Yeah it is rough, good luck with your situation, I figured with how the new the cars were it would take some time on the repairs, everything else on your car checked out okay after the accident?

Sounds good, dropped of the car to the body shop for repairs and I was not able to replicate the issue, is this something you hear on your ML at all times?

Thanks.

Yes, I hear it when turning left. Hasn't gotten better or worse. Tech told me I'm not the only one, but MB has to document multiple instances before a fix/recall is implemented.

I live it when dealers use that line. I tell them it doesn't mean its right but it does mean that the other vehicle has the same defect.

no more noise!

5k miles on the ML, and there is now no more noise at all when turning the steering wheel to the left. Not sure exactly when it stopped as I do not drive the car very often. I noticed when I drove it last night that the noise was gone completely.

Perhaps the car being new and components being stiff was in fact the issue.
