Believe they only go on when its dark and the door is opened. Thats if they are like the ones on my 2010 ML550. They are called "puddle lights".
it would have to be dark out. Your headlamp switch would have to be set to auto and I believe the locator lighting setting in the IC would also need to be turned on. When you unlock the vehicle, the lights on the bottom of the mirrors should turn on until you open the door

Could be you do not have them. Not familiar with the packages on the new ML's but is there a lighting package that includes the Xenons? I vaguely recall that on my 2010 ML550 these puddle lights were part of the lighting package that came with the Xenons. Check with your dealer.

Do you see the lights or just the lens? Wouldnt be surprised if they put the lens on non equipped mirrors. Would save them from having to manufacture 2 types.
The dealer demo that I had for a few days did not have the lighting package. Although it is a Canadian car, and sometimes there are small differences, so it maybe the case that your ML has the same mirror covers but does not have the lamps inside.

Surround lighting activation
Here you go. It's called "surround lighting." It's standard per the feature list on the MBCA website.

Ya, the lights under the mirror is called locator lighting. Supposed to light up on lock or unlock only at night and only if headlights set to auto and it's set to enabled in menu. However, mine aren't. Anyone else?
In the multifunction display, settings menu, under lighting you'll see "locator lighting". The feature must be enabled (apparently). Manual also says for it to work, headlights must be set to auto and it must be dark out. Still isn't working for me with all those things confirmed. I was wondering if anyone else had the same issue.
