Breaking News: Production Delay on 550
OK, so I ordered a 550 a couple months ago and have been waiting on the build-date (see Confirmation of Lighting Package Delay thread for more details). Got the call today and here are my options:
#1 - 1st Decade March OK but no Lighting Pkg, no Pano Roof, no Brown Satin Ash trim, no MB-TEX dashboard
#2 - 1st Decade May OK but no Lighting Pkg and no Pano Roof.
#3 - Some time after option #2 if I want it equipped my way
Oh well, my SA and I decided we'll probably start over when the 2013s are scheduled as it wasn't making too much sense to buy a 2012 so late in the MY cycle.

I think when people are spending 50 - 60K, I would assume they have much knowledge of the "debacle".
Yes, there are specific options that are not available "Yet, or if ever". However, that doesn't mean that the majority of people are dumbfounded to options and build of what they are purchasing.
It's not hard to look online to view every possible option find what you don't care for, and find something on the lot. The average age of the ML buyer is 51 years of age. I would assume the group of individuals who buy a ML off the lot are wise with all due respect.
Just my opinion.

I'm sure the issues would be corrected faster is people started cancelling orders in droves and buying competing brands.
I am also waiting on a GLK build because no dealer in the country had one in stock equipped even remotely close to how I wanted mine. Same issue when I ordered my ML back in 07.
Yet every Jeep dealer in my area has several Grand Cherokees with HID lighting packages in almost every option build combination in stock!!

Honestly...if they change the light housing completely thats going to completely change the look of the Truck! That is pretty screwed up for people that payed good money to get into a 2012. If this is true I'm getting out of my Truck, I'm only a month into it and have Mercedes calling me everyday checking on my window problem that they cant seem to fix. I'll just have them pull me out of my lease and not even bother taking them up on they're offer of getting a new truck....So not cool to start changing things so quickly!

Mercedes also offers stronger H7 halogen bulbs, which might help some W166s MLs to improve their halogen light performance?
Uprated H7 bulbs
New H7 bulbs part # A0009980007 are available (80% more light and 30% more road surface illumination for high beams) – recognized by their chrome-plated lamp cap and can install into all H7 halogen headlamps.

So, between my original post and today, my SA was going to see if MB could somehow get a pano-roof and lighting pkg to complete my order in the May build. Didn't happen. I'm sure it was his last grasp at holding the deposit. Kudos for the refund issued today.
Our next plan is to wait for the 2013MY which he said orders will be taken starting in July. I'm actually relieved he couldn't pull it off for a June delivery since the next MY would be on the horizon and I'm getting the impression there are some somewhat major bugs and/or modifications that are being worked out.

There must be 550s on the production line with both lighting and pano as those options are standard for Canada.

US and Canada production timelines are in sync. As Canada has always had bi-xenons as standard on the 550 and since option planning was provided to Germany to indicate pano roof would also be standard, I would imagine that there's some priority for Canadian units in this regard.
