Tires are not great in snow
Since we have not much snow since the surprise Halloween storm, I decided to forego getting snow tires this year and wait until next season. I am rethinking my decision as yesterday my ML handled the snow terribly. The Continentals are really not that good in the snow.
Looks like I will be getting a set on Nokian Hakkas soon!

Picked mine up on 12/19/11 with Dunlops.......Got to my country place in New Hampshire today and not much snow to put them to the test. I wonder how they determine which brand tire to furnish and which brand is better??

I think it is the luck of the draw in terms of which brand you get. I guess I am spoiled. I have been driving with Nokian snow tires for the past 20 years on all my cars.

So far, I've found the ML OK with the all seasons (very mild winter here so far), but I just put some Nokian WGR2 all-weather tires on my wife's Mazda 5 and could not believe the change in handling. I suspect that I'll switch the ML to the all-weather tires next winter (we don't have a place to store multiple sets of tires).

I've always had a 2nd set of wheels for my MLs with studless Winters (Pirelli Scorpions most recently). Makes a big difference. I will be looking for a set of 19s when I get mine

Tires
As GreginNH says, it's pretty random. Manufacturers like to use at least two models on each vehicle to spread buisness around and guard against shortages. What brands/models are people getting?

We picked ours up this morning and it had Pirelli Scorpions on it. They look nice.
