Who makes the ML's BLUETEC Diesel?
Can you help me out here by filling in the following WHO MAKES THE ENGINE AND WHERE?
Diesel Engine only:
'12 ML
'13 GL
'12 X5
'12 TOUREG
'13 CAYENNE
I get the feeling these are all the same "base" engines. Then the factory does a little tweak here or there and slaps their logo on it! Does the iron block come from the SAME factory somewhere in Germany? That has to be the case as they are all V6 diesels with +/- in specs. Also, all are GERMAN...
I'd like to believe I have an engine that is BENZ from the ground up?

The Mercedes-Benz OM642 engine is a 3.0-liter, 72° 24-valve, aluminum block diesel V6 engine manufactured by the Mercedes-Benz division of Daimler AG as a replacement for the Mercedes-Benz inline-5 and -6 engines.[1]
The engine features common rail fuel injection and a variable nozzle turbocharger. The injection system operates at 1,600 bar (23,000 psi), while the compression ratio is 18:1.[1] The engine features a counter-rotating balance shaft mounted between the cylinder banks to cancel the vibrations inherent to the 72 degree V6 design, and the crankpins are offset by 48 degrees to achieve even 120 degree firing intervals. In some heavy vehicle applications, Mercedes' BlueTec AdBlue urea injection is utilised for NOx reduction.[2] In lighter vehicle applications, a NOx storage catalyst captures nitrous oxides, which are periodically purged (decomposed) by running the engine slightly rich. A particulate filter lowers soot, making this engine ULEV certified.[2][3] Engine mass is 208 kg (460 lb). Power output is 165 kW (224 PS; 221 hp) and 510 N·m (380 lb·ft) of torque.[1] For the 2012 model year, output on US mercedes diesel vehicles will be raised to 240 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque.
The engine is manufactured at the Daimler AG plant in Marienfelde, Berlin, Germany.[4]

Diesels galore
AFAIK, each of the manufacturers you listed makes their own engines. The VW & Cayenne (and Q7), however, uses a version of the VW Group diesel. At this level there is nothing generic, even though the specs look similar. The MB block is linerless aluminum.

liner-less? im guessing its damn well made?
the 300D has 295K miles with NO engine issues whatsoever. Iron block i believe?
can I expect that from this aluminum block?

Lots of tech information here: https://mbworld.org/forums/new-m-cla...ml-diesel.html Can't answer you basic question, though. It will get out of its own way, though, unlike the 300D, with 2x the hp and 2.4x the torque of the old turbo.

Plus, reading up on what else is out there (just Google aluminum vs. iron engine [block]), my impression is that most of the issues with longevity and wear and tear have been ironed out.
Presumably the cylinders (and other moving parts or parts that come into contact with moving parts) are not aluminum, as aluminum do not wear as well iron?
I would have thought an aluminum engine block would not last as long as an iron engine block, as the melting point of AL is much lower than FE, but I guess an engine is much more than just the engine block. Also, the aluminum may be an alloy, not pure AL?

The Diesel engine idles well even in 90 degree weather and AC blasting.
Had to idle it today for over 30 minutes with the AC cranked up. Handled well. No AC "fade" No annoying overheat fan kicked in. Good job MB!
