If you've got DISTRONIC PLUS set at 80mph and there's a parked car on the freeway, the car won't stop for you. It needs a reasonable amount of reaction time as it only sees 200 yards (IIRC) ahead.
The DISTRONIC PLUS system is imperfect. There are nuances that will cause DISTRONIC PLUS to deactivate on occasion, whether it's due to radar interference, weather conditions, etc. I have also triggered PRE-SAFE when using DISTRONIC PLUS whereby the seatbelt pre-tensioners engaged, yet there was no imminent danger.
In any case, autonomous panic braking when DISTRONIC PLUS is not active would not be a good thing. We are not there yet. Overall it's a great system, but it's no replacement for human control.
