Oil spec
I have a new 2012 ML350 (gas).
I am new to Mercedes and am trying to get my head around the specifications for this Crossover.
The manual says I have engine model 276 ... but there is no model 276 specified in the oil spec 229.5? I am not even sure I am in the right forum (w166).
At the end of the day, I just want to learn what oil to put in the thing. Seems like 0w-40w or 5w-40, or 5w-50 or ... something else. I'll stick with Mobil 1 since there is a sticker for it in the engine bay.
Can anyone sort me out....thanks!

I just bought the same vehicle and can't believe the range of oils you can use, according to the service manual. My pick-up truck (Honda Ridgeline) is just the opposite and very specific as to the oil to be used - 5w20 and that's it. Since I do my own oil changes I will probably go with the European Mobil 1 at 0w40 since you can find it easily at many places, including WalMart for around $7 a quart. It is expensive but not terribly so for the quality. It is very, very thin oil, especially for here in Texas where it gets over 100 degrees for weeks on end, but that is the oil most people recommend for this car. Don't forget the filter. I believe to get the best out of this oil in terms of longevity, you need to use a fleece rather than paper filter.

All you new ML owners out there should be checking your oil regularly!! My 550 is down to barely hitting the low mark on the dipstick when I just checked it today at 2,600 km and this was the same with my 08 ML when it was a couple of months old. Whether they come delivered a little lower than full or the engines burn off a quart or two during break in they need to get topped up a couple of months after taking delivery.
