it is a variable in the sense that you will most likely not get that kind of milage on a whole tank of fuel, because those conditions are near perfect which is not representative of any daily commute imo.

My highway mpg experiment was simply to find out the theoretical mpg. I realize it's best case and not practical to think sustainable on every trip. But I still submit a Mercedes diesel is a fine work of engineering and I'm really enjoying my ml. My average mpg is usually around 25 mostly city driving.
