A gaggle of MB's
Mats...

The "original" All-Weather-Mats were subject to recall - so anyone with a W166 that had those original MB all-weather-mats, when you go into service dept the service advisers and techs are instructed to pull all 4 pieces per that recall notice. That all came about last September.

MB was to announce no-charge replacements - which most assumed at the time would be same style with some redesign to beat the contested "safety issue".

The "safety issue" has turned out there was a accident report based on a owner claiming the mats interfered/jack-up the accelerator - which was later found to be the case that owner did not pull the carpeted mats from underneath - so the un-snapped all weather drivers mat reportedly slid forward and contributed to the cause of the accident.

The replacement mats are not the original all-weather type - they are the Weather Tech "Design Fit" type which are trays of somewhat thinner material that can be "safely" placed either on-top of the original carpeted mats, or the carpeted mats can be pulled and the trays put on-top of the floor carpet.

The trays have the MB logo plate, in place of the WeatherTech logo plate.

Initial shipments of the replacement mats were received by dealers about 10-14 days ago - with specific instructions from MB to parts/service department that customers who had mats "pulled" should get all their replacements 1st, before the dealer could offer the new DS style mat for sale.

Note, the WeatherTech all-weather-style mat is available - however, MB cannot help you secure that - all MB can do is replace and sell the DS style trays.

Keep the beat !

Is there any way to refuse having these replaced? My dealer is telling me I have no choice, short of removing them before bringing the vehicle in for service. I purchased the vehicle and mats separately.

I hate Weathertech tray style mats (bought them for my last ML) and will be pulling out my rubber all season next month when the 550 goes in for her first service. No way I am replacing those.

Reason for the hate of Weathertech style? They are slippery so when driving in dress shoes I found I had to keep my feet fully extended and couldn't have my heel halfway up the mat or it would just slip down. Might sound strange but it bugged me and I sold those Weathertech mats after one winter.

I don't see how a dealer could pull the mats without agreement from the owner. That's theft, just as much as if they seized the CDs or sunglasses that might be inside the vehicle. The mats are property of the owner, and if the owner doesn't agree to removal until replacements are in-hand, then it's the dealership who has no choice but to follow the owner's wishes.

Yes if the "original style" MB all-weather mats are in the W166 the dealer has no option other than to pull all (4) which will be replaced with "new style" at no charge.

I don't like the looks of them, especially the rear. It may be an advantage to some people to have the single piece rear that covers the hump but rarely does anyone sit in my back seat and I've never had three people back there. I like the cleaner looks of the two, small snap-in pieces of the originals. I will have to remember to take mine out and put in the fabric mats when I bring it in for service or they might replace them on me.
