"Click" noise from ML350 steering wheel
Hi all,
I have a 2013 ML350 purchased it 5 months earlier.
Recently I noticed a clicking sound (or a "tick" sound maybe) from the steering wheel column. Don't think I've been hearing it for the first 2 or 3 months.
I hear that sound whenever the wheel is released from the full left position to the right while the turn signal is on. (can't hear it for the opposite turning)
Took it to a dealership and they said other new vehicles of the same model made the same noise and it's normal. This is what they say: "If the steering wheel is turned to beyond the center point to the opposite direction that the turn signal switch is depressed, once the wheel centers and turns back, one click will be heard, another half turn or so a secondary detent sound will be heard. The second detent is activated so the steering wheel does not have to return to the center position to retract turn signal indication.
This has been determined as a normal function."
Honestly, regardless it's normal or not, I'm still annoyed by this noise.
Anyone has the same issue? Can anyone give me more detailed explanation about what they're saying please?
Anything would be appreciated.

So this happens if (for example) you have the wheel turned to the right and you're signalling left?
Do you have some sort of double hairpin turn on your daily route that causes this click to happen?

Hi YYZ,
The surest way to reproduce it is to make a u-turn. So the left turn signal is flashing, I turn the steering wheel fully to the left and release it.
Thank you.

I have something like this. It sounds like a small spring just popped.
If I turn my left blinker on and then turn my steering wheels slightly to the right, the spring pop sounds happens. Same when right blinker is on and turning wheel slightly left.
I figured it was a safety "warning" feature of sorts. I don't get why it's there, and even worse is how cheap the car sounds when it happens.

I hear it every once in a while, too. It does sound rather harsh and cheap. I suspect it comes from some sort of device that disengages the turn signal somewhere in the process of returning the wheel to center

Yep, think it is normal. My 2013 ML550 does it too...both directions. Does sound cheap, but normal turnsignal clicking when you activate the stalk and turn wheel opposite direction. Bugged me too, but normal.

Have the same "click" on my 2013. Sometimes I throw the signal on, then swing wide to make a turn, or get a better angle, and it pops. Seem to remember I have owned other cars having the same click, when the signal is engaged. To me it's the spring return mechanism passing a threshold. Maybe it's just more noticeable in this one...

I have the same clicks but I can hear them with only open window, and my turn lights switched off. When I drive slowly back and turn steering wheel right or left it's makes few clicks . When I drive direct and turn full left or right then it makes one click each side.
Sounds the same as when you drive long time and then switched off your car it's makes some clicks wile it's getting cold.
The car is new, only 3 000 miles.
Hear it only with open window
