Mileage and HP ratings
ML 550 14/19 MPG
CL 550 (4matic) 15/24 MPG
CLS 550 (4matic) 18/27 MPG
The weight between these vehicles is no more than 300-400 lbs or less. Just curious since I am close to test driving one and trying to be half way informed about the vehicle.
The differences between the two passenger cars would mainly be in weight and tuning as well as gearing and trans choices.
Since you are posting this on the W166 ML forum - readers here are going to assume you are trying to benchmark the fuel economy of the 2014 ML550 against other 2014 Mercedes models with the "new generation" MB 550 engine - is that a correct assumption or are you looking for something else ?
1st - assume we are comparing based on US EPA standards -fueleconomy.gov
2nd - assume all models to be compared are based on 4-footed/4matic all-time-all-wheel-drive
3rd - your "major" causal facotr here has to do with front face profile determinant of air resistance against forward speed - sitck your open hand out the window at 70 mph - then stick a closed fist - at forward highway speed front face profile is very important as it is the determinat of how much air you have to move out of the way
4th - yes, same engine and assume all else equal - a SUV will have more forward air resistance at speed than a sedan or coupe
5th - ergo, highway fuel will be less for a SUV than for a sedan/coupe
On the remainder City fuel calculations, that's where most importantly drive style, then weight, and 3rd aerodynamics play into those "minor" differences.
Frankly, if you are chasing fuel economy for a SUV - consider a BlueTec 350 in ML/GL which will give you V8 torque and better fuel economy than the 550 gas models - or if you really want to chase fuel economy in a sedan consider a V6 350 BlueTec E350 (V8 torque) or chas the new MB mileage dragon with the new E250 BlueTec turbo-4 which stomps the whole game with downright peppy V6 equivalent torque and 27/42 mpg.
