Oil consumption
I drove my BT ML from El Paso, TX to Chicago, IL and eventually to Brampton, Ontario after couple of days. It only burnt about half a quart of oil on a 2,000 miles drive. I carried 3 qts with me just in case.

How is it not good? Manual states about 0.9 qt is consumed every 600 miles on page 365. I was driving 80 MPH for not more than 2 hrs then 70 most of the way.

How did you estimate 1/2 quart - by top off ?
Please note you have 2.5 qt reserve in the oil capacity - which is the amount between max and min on the dipstick.. 2000 miles highway driving you could reasonable expect some oil usage, but frankly 1/2 quart is technically 20% of the reserve

According to the dipstick per manual. If it goes down to the minimum line, it requires you to add 1.1 qt. So by guestimation of half line between top to bottom it's roughly 1/2 qt.

From past experience before you actually monitor oil consumption, make sure the level on the dipstick is topped off at the "max" mark, read on level ground, cold engine that was off for half hour+.
Reason is that several dealers will only add "x" amount of oil, and it will read about the middle of the dipstick. (Good enough for them) Then you drive and later check it and think it used oil because you had to top up.
Once I started monitoring this way, I have never had to top up with mine in over 100K miles.
Also half a qt on your new '14 engine for that trip is well within spec's. Especially since you went from hot to cold to freezing climates.

As yet I have never added any oil between oil changes. The level may have dropped but still not down to the "MIN" despite 20,000km oil change intervals. This applies to both the 2009 & 2013 Ml diesels.
Usage of 1/2 quart in 2000 miles (if accurately measured) relates to more than 4 litres in 20,000km, which I would consider to be a serious problem.

You guys must not have driven your truck hard... LOL... Rule of thumb and they even teach in school is that you wait 5 minutes after shutting the engine after it's been running. You don't have to wait 30 minutes. As long as it reach it's operating temperature. I know it's a different beast but when I had my '09 E92 M3 I always had to carry oil with me due to the fact that I drive the ish out of it; nothing less than 100 MPH. Diesel is meant to be driven hard.

Did you add any when it was half down or just watch the level?
I did not catch how many miles you before the start of the trip. It could be the first half was before the engine had been completely broken in and the rings had not totally sealed yet.
