Halogen bulb query

Hi I am a relative novice but had a quick question regarding the stock halogen headlights. I didn't not opt for Xenons when I purchased the car (huge regret) so looking for a cost effective solution to improve the stock halogen bulbs. Would you suggest a direct halogen build replacement with something better or one of the HID kits?

There's a thread on here w/ guys trying several of the HID kits. Last I read up on it, to no avail. I'd say just to put it on your list for the next one.

Thanks. Would there be any point in changing the stock halogens for an aftermarket alternative which promise to be brighter etc?

Sylvania SilverStar Ultra H7 bulbs for both High & Low beam headlights look very nice on my 2012 ML350 BT.

http://www.sylvania.com/en-us/applic...s/lrgmain.aspx

I ended up going with an LED for the Parking lights which are nice and White instead of the yellowish color of the stock bulbs.

Thanks for your help. So would you say there was a noticeable difference between the stock halogen and the replacements? How easy are they to replace?

Most definitely there is a noticeable difference in the color of the light. Much whiter and brighter than stock. They are relatively easy to replace through access hole under the front wheel wells ( low beams) and the hood ( high beams & parking lights). Took me about 20 minutes for all the bulbs.

Which version is compatible? I can't find an Extreme White H7 that is listed for the ML350 BT. The PIAA Application app doesn't seem to work so I can't get the right bulb number form their site.

I used the silver star ultras in my pickup truck, they were an 25% improvement, but only lasted a little over one year. Back to originals.

I just got a ML350 without the bi-zenon lights and had a set of HID's installed from a local guy here in NJ. I believe you can also purchase the kits from him and he uses very high quality kits and bulb out resisters. His info is as follows: Lifhtmodz, Paterson NJ 973-400-9017. I used to do the installs myself but last winter I had him install a set of HIDs on my E350 and they are great so I knew when I got my ML350 this year I was not all concerned about finding one without the lighting package since I new for a few hundred I could have then installed. I found that the HIDs are way better then the silverstar ultra and even PIAA lights and decided back in the early 2000's that HID's were the way to go. About the only thing I found better was the new LED headlights that they have on the E350s. this year. I just converted my motorcycle headlight to a LED and there is a substantial difference.

You do realize that any and every HID kit are not legal on the US roadways, right?

Yep but the way I look at it, for 10 years my cars have been subject to the state of NJ inspection process and they used to do a very intensive inspection process including suspension parts, shimmy, brakes, lights and emissions systems. Unfortunately, now they only do an emissions test to save money. I have gone thru with several cars and HID lights and had discussions with the inspectors about what the look for to give the ok. They told me that their biggest issue was with higher power xenon bulbs that have a greenish or blue color because there is a requirement for specific color temp range. They also said that the aftermarket PIAA bulbs greater than 55w would get your vehicle rejected because they are to bright for the reflector but the recent cars have really well designed reflectors with a good cutoff (unlike the old sealed beam lights) so when they put them up with their testing equipment, they pass. As far as not being legal on US roadways..................most minor modifications, window tinting, tuning etc as well as exceeding the speed limit is illegal on us roads. Years ago, people would put in conversion kits and would blind everyone coming towards them. I have not had anyone give me their high beams since I have been using conversion kits.
