You're not driving it enough! Get out there and enjoy it.

I think your right, I guess in the northwest they don't drive all that much. I thought I did a lot of driving in NJ but when I go to Florida it really adds up.

The challenge is from a medical point of view. We just can't get out and drive around like we used to.

My man, have a 2012 s350, an 13 ml550, a 12 vw tdi toureag......go the 10k at the bare minimum, I push all of mine past and go sometimes 13.5-15k miles it doesn't even have any affect on the motor....one of my guys would run his bmw 335 up to 20k in-between each oil change, do not waste your time or money...I drive hard and the mechanics all say my oil looks no blacker or worse at 8k, 10k, or 15k......besides its got a warranty anyways which its very hard to prove if something did go wrong that it was the oils fault.......

With a 1,000 mile on my ML, I found this thread of great interest. There are several web pages discussing the improvements of oil because of synthetics, and their ability to withstand long term heat breakdown. Being old school of the original 3,000 mile or 3 month changes is is not easy pushing past 5k on changes. I am including the one link below that Mercedes has for tested oils.

I know this debate will continue on.

If it meets the spec you will be fine. That said, for no logical reason, I'd keep using what you have been given the longevity.

Well you have a warranty as long as you can prove that you performed the required maintenance on time.
If not, it's the owner's fault, not the oil's.

The color of the oil as reported by a mechanic is irrelevant, especially with a diesel.

Color of oil is not relevant even on gasoline engines, not just diesel engines. Unless you have sent the oil off for analysis, drawing conclusions about changing the oil at 500, 1000, 3000, 5000 miles is meaningless as well. It's all conjecture that changing oil sooner is better than later.

Especially when "color" is "as reported by mechanic." Time to look for a new mechanic.
