2015 ML350 4MATIC Engine acceleration noise level

Hi,

I bought 2015 ML350 4MATIC few weeks ago. This is my first SUV so not sure if this normal or not but it seems that acceleration noise is audible even all the windows closed. I can hear the acceleration noise from a full stop to 20-30 miles. It seems engine is making lot of noise as its running too fast, gives the feeling that I am giving too much of acceleration.. I went to the dealer, they did road test and they said its normal.

Anyone has experienced this?

Congrats on the ML..

Our 2012 ML was a little loud under acceleration but I never considered it too loud. It was much quieter than the 2011 ML we had..

May I ask what you were driving before the ML?

I am doing the 2014 350 BlueTec and you would think it being a diesel would be louder but I find it to be pretty quiet!

^I agree with greg. The bluetec (diesel) is remarkably quiet...idle or under acceleration. I've driven many gas version w166 and always found the bluetec more quiet.

Congrats on your new ml. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Thanks everyone for your reply. I wish it was quite but I think I will get used to it.

Well that is part of your issue.. You're right, the Camry is a very quiet car. A friend has a 2010 V6 as his daily driver and it is very quiet and solid..

Going from a Camry V6 to an ML is going to take (as you said) some getting used to.

Hi,

Its now three months and I am completely enjoying my ML. I drove almost 1200 miles for my vacation and it was just awesome. However I continue to feel that engine noise inside the car is excessive. I have taken a video which captured the engine noise after a complete stop from an intersection. Let me know your thoughts.

Sounds quiet to me. Some of your "noise" is tire on pavement noise... don't forget you had skinny little tires on a light weight car before, now you've got large, wide tires with a more aggressive tread under a heavy vehicle.

never gets above 2k rpm. you also have more hp, bigger tires etc.
I find my ML550 too quiet..I'd like to hear more from a 400hp motor. the six liter amg absolutely rumbles.

prius is NOT quiet, from 20-40 that 4cyl motor is revving pretty high, a lot of batteries to haul around. Plus it's made of paper thin materials, with no heavy sound dampening applied.
very quiet around town, but getting up to speed it works hard!

get a tesla...from 0-60 the only sound is the driver saying "holy ****". (the Tesla p85D was just debuted that goes 0-60 in 3.2secs...700hp AWD).

^I too agree with the OP.

Whenever we get a loaner from the dealer it is always a new 350ml and my wife and I both agree that the V6 is too loud/noisy. We drive a 2012 bluetec and it is much quieter while idling or accelerating. Heck, sometimes at a stoplight I need to look at the tach to make sure it's running...it's so smooth and quiet.

One thing for sure though, the V6 gas is quite smooth....even though it's a bit loud.

I dont find the gas engine loud at all. It is quiet and smooth. If you rev it up you will hear a nice noise not like a cheap tin can noise from a regular car. You will get used to it.

Hi Everyone:

I am going to share this with my Service Adviser as well but curious to get your thoughts as well-
https://www.dropbox.com/s/cybitm8n89...28-15.mov?dl=0

I continue to feel excessive engine noise which is sometimes more, sometimes less. I feel other folks are overtaking even after so much of acceleration.

Thanks.

Hi All:

It's unbelievable that my ML350 Service A is due in 10 days. Its going to be one year in a one month! Overall very pleased with my ML350 other than this noise situation which I guess I am getting used to :-)

Here is my issue list which I will share with my Service Adviser but thought of sharing with this group as well:
1) Started noticing bad smell after starting AC which goes away after few seconds. This does not occur all the time.
2) Sometimes acceleration is smooth from 0 to 30 but sometimes feel more acceleration is required and can see RPM goes above 3K and can hear the engine noise! This behavior is the primary cause of concern for me for quite sometime.

Thanks.

Hi:

Finally I gave my ML350 for service A on last Friday and got a call from the service adviser in the evening that they found some "code" related to transmission and need to send the code to Mercedes office in East Coast and the response would be only Monday / Tuesday. I got the loaner car so no problem here. Today I got call that looks like the recommendation is to replace "transmission valve" and when I asked what the problem is, SA only told that there were some codes and the recommendation is to replace it! The work would be covered by warranty (its only 1 year) and should be done by this Friday. I am happy that alteast they found some issue instead of saying not able to reproduce it. But at the same time, I am concerned that a one year old ML350 with 6K miles has this issue.

I would update this thread once I receive my ML350 back on Friday.

I went from an 07 E550 to a 15 ML350. In comparing the 2 engines, the 350 is not a torqu-ey engine so it sort of screams on heavy acceleration, where the 550 didn't break a sweat under the same conditions... an just woooshed up to speed.

Finally received ML350 after one week.

Here is what I found printed on the invoice-
6934 VGS Control Unit Defective
Transmission Control Unit Code P060600 Component Y3/8n4 fault integrated transmission control unit
Fault Code: 804WMB08
REMOVED VGS Conductor Plate and Valve Body

I hope no more problems :-)
