2014 ML350 - question about door locks

New to this forum and MB ownership, and we're trying to figure out if there's any way to improve the auto-lock functionality of our "new" car.

Essentially, our old car would auto-lock when we got above 10 mph, and then unlock all doors automatically when it was put back into park. With this car, it auto-locks as expected when we start driving, but then if I put into park, I still have to manually hit "unlock" just to open a passenger's door from the outside once getting out. This is quite annoying as I was used to putting the car into park, and then hopping out and opening by toddler's door in the back to take her out, but if I forget to hit the "unlock" button and I don't have my key with me (say, it's in my wife's purse and she's already walking away from the car), I then need to either have her come back, or go to the driver's door again and hit "unlock", then go back to get my daughter!

Is this a byproduct of having Keyless-Go, or would all of the auto-locks work the same, no matter what?

Is there any engineering menu change we can make to improve this, so that all doors unlock as soon as the car is in park? What about if they can all unlock if opening the trunk? (the latter question is for another annoyance of ours)

Not thrilled with the current functionality, as the person with the key is not always the person going to the various doors, and the car seems to be very picky about when it will unlock for you!

not sure if it is the same, but my 2016 unlocks all doors. the unlock button should also unlock all doors. if it is supposed to be the same, is child safety lock on. good luck, ron

Check the programmable features:

Page 86...press and hold either unlock or lock for 5 secs to enable/disable auto lock,,,auto lock with doors closed and wheels turning..etc

Yes, hitting the "unlock" from the driver's door will unlock all doors. That's not the issue though - I'd rather it unlock automatically once I put the car into park, or even shut the car off, but that doesn't happen.

It seems like my only solution is to turn off auto-lock altogether, so the doors don't lock unless we tell them to...

I have that enabled on the door in question, but that should only affect opening from the inside. I am talking about being able to open the door from the OUTSIDE once the car is stopped, put into park, and turned off. NONE of the doors unlock when you turn the car off, which I find very odd.

my doors don't unlock until you take an action like open the front door (again 2016). it sounds like you need to look at the programming per Nanook. ron

Once the car is turned off and I open the front driver's door, it opens, but none of the others do from the outside. I'll play with the programming then I guess!

im not quite following. if you are saying that only the driver door unlocks, then it does sound like programming. if you are saying that the other doors unlock, but can't be opened from the outside, it sounds like something else. i rechecked, once my 2016 is off, opening the driver OR passenger door will unlock ALL doors. ron

additionally, there does seem to be some safety rules. if i lock the truck via mbrace, i have to unlock with the fob. the same goes for locking with the fob, need to unlock with the fob.

one other thing, if the fob is inside the truck, i believe that you cannot (and should not) be able to unlock the doors from the outside via the handle sensor. that would kind of obviate locks. ron

I think that's the bingo here!! Now, that makes perfect sense, as long as the car is on... safety-wise, of course you want the doors to remain locked from the outside, even if in Park... but once the car is OFF, the doors should all unlock, I would think.

I don't think there's going to be any way to change this behavior - instead, I just have to make I get used to hitting the "Unlock" button before exiting the vehicle.

Its a safety feature on most of the new cars, a few of my old cars had the auto unlock when I shut off the car but if you think about it, it is not the safest thing if you are in a bad neighborhood.

Just to update this, we brought it into the shop to have this looked at (along with a transmission and suspension issue), and they verified it was not working as intended so have done a software update. Hoping that fixes it - will report back!
