Looking to Buy First Mercedes

Hello Everyone,
I am looking to buy an ML 350 ( preferably diesel) and i wanted to know a few things.
How reliable are these cars? Any issues i can expect i.e transmission, HVAC ect? Are they reliable over 100k?
What gas mileage are you seeing (gas and Diesel). I am a territory rep so good MPG is important.
My comparison to this car is the Lexus RX 450.
Thank you!

I have 2014BT, I get 24MPG an average.
If driving
40-50mph - 34-36MPG
60-70mph - 27-29MPG
70 - 80 and over 21-23MPG

Before I got ML was considering to get RX350 Sport. ML is much nicer ride but I think Lexus is more reliable.

Consider warranty.

CPO (Certified pre-owned) free through Mercedes benz dealerships only, extends power train warranty on used vehicles bought only at MB dealerships. FREE!

ELW - Extended limited warranty, adds bumper to bumper warranty to any used car purchased at MB dealership, car has to be under factory warranty to qualify. NOT FREE ($1600)

From reading cars with AirMatic suspension have high chance of requiring service after factory warranty expires

On Diesel models it's critical the service schedule (oil changes) has been done on time.

Get the light package (HID), Everyone complaints about how bad their lighting is without it!!
So consider a car that absolutely has HID Bi-Xenon light package.

Running boards on these cars generally are a negative as their just make your pants dirty and not enough step to them to actually be stepped on. so one without it may be beneficial if you dress up.

So looks like you are in US. Try to calculate how much could you save on fuel if you buy diesel. Gas is way cheaper considering the cost of service and fuel together you have to really drive a lot to save something. If you buy a new - you are to take extended warranty if you willing to keep that car longer then 4 years. With diesel it is a must-must as generally service is expensive.I would get it with any car. All modern cars are made to be generally reliable only for particular period of time. MB is not an exception, they want to make money too. In my case I would note that after 4 years the greatest problem is a corrosion on wires and electric contacts - this is a real problem. They can fix everything, just after warranty expires you will pay for that. That is general rule. CPO is not a remedy(after 4 years are gone the coverage from MB is not full) but better to have CPO from MB and all bells and whistles associated with it. My personal opinion - I would not get a diesel at all. I hate all these "ecological" systems which keep that car unnecessary complex. It's just professional deformation. The best choice to get ML350 2014-2015 gasoline engine - in that case you can find low milage with good options for decent money with maximum warranty coverage. That V6 is pretty good engine with a lot of power. Consider V8 as well. Mine has 21m/g on average. Good luck!

Agreed
Buy a diesel because need it or you are intoxicated with the torque and fuel economy. Don't buy it because you think it will save you money.

Honestly, i want it because of the huge hwy range it has. The gas 3.5 has enough power for me, Having said that perhaps the gas ml owners would like to chime in on their gas mileage.
Thank you!

Check this link for more info on MPG
http://www.fuelly.com/car/mercedes-benz/ml350

BTW, according to my log, Im doing about 20K miles a year, its about $1K less for diesel vs gas. If buy it at gas station, there are more places to buy diesel at least $1 less per gallon.
If nothing happens - fuel filter which is about $150 at home or $350 at a dealer.

I buy AdBlue at VW dealer. The same ISO code, 5Gallons for $20.
Every 5K adding about 2.5 gallons.

I get around 680 kilometer for a full tank of gas on my ML350 gas with 90% highway driving. Speed is at 100-120 kph. I am happy with the fuel consumption of my ML compared to the diesel variant. Plus I do not have to worry about expensive diesel parts breaking down.

Just for comparison I would spend another $40 for gas if I use my 2009 C300 on the same trip.

Done this a few times to compare fuel consumption of both cars and even though I like my C300 better for drivebility it cant beat the fuel consumption of the heavier truck which buffles me.

My 2013 GLK also consumes the same fuel as the ML maybe because of the bad wind drag of the car on highway speeds.

Again, if you are doing a lot of highway driving and will keep the car for a long time get the gas version. You can also look at the GLK250 but dont compare the creature comfort of the smaller truck to the MLs.

Not to put a damper on the gasser, but my ML 350 Bluetec I could run close to empty highway around 1100km with still diesel left!. waaaay better than a gasser in terms of fuel economy.

The GLE Diesel 6cyl comes close, but only put 1300km on it from new total, but guessing slighty less than my ML going forward.

The GLE 4 cylinder diesel should do even better!

Simple terms:

A service - 10000 Miles/1 year/ Low Ash oil, Mercedes or equivalen spec for their diesel engines (229.51 type oil) plus DEF fluid

B Service includes more filters, plus A service

maybe I'm just used to doing maintenance on my cars but there doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary on there. Whoever doesn't used the proper oils and fluids and doesn't change their oil on time is just an idiot.
