I'd put anything in there for now. You're up in the mountains on X-Mas eve, no time to be screwing around.

Oh, and Merry X-Mas

Stop by the local pharmacy and buy distilled water to fill up. No need for coolant when topping off.

^ +1.

If I were you, I'd simply use little bit of distilled water if it's just topping it off. It won't hurt anything.

ok, wasn't going to say anything, but water freezes at 32 degrees. if there isn't enough coolant in the reservoir to dilute to a safety point well below that, you'll risk cracking the res tank. just saying. good luck, ron

Thank you for all suggestions, but can some one to tell what coolant MB is using?
Is the link above the right one? Its for all MB models but like to be sure.

Only add coolant that has been premixed
with the desired antifreeze protection. You
could otherwise damage the engine.
Further information on coolants can be found
in the Mercedes-Benz Specifications for Service
Products, MB BeVo 310.1, e.g. on the
Internet at http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com.
Or contact a qualified specialist workshop

copied out of my manual. 2016 gle 350 4matic. there is a website in the text. ron

Best idea. These low coolant sensors are very sensitive and will indicate low even if you're a tiny bit "low". I'd never "Put anything "in it because once you contaminate it with the wrong coolant, the cooling system will be forever somewhat compromised.

Do not top up with anything except OEM MB coolant that is specific to your vehicle. The coolant has various seal conditioners, water pump lubricants, anti-deposit, anti-oxidation and anti-bacterial additives and was formulated to work with and protect the various materials present in the cooling system in your particular car based on the model and production date. MB has two different coolant formulations which are not interchangeable (one is pink and the other blue in colour), both of which are different from the generic stuff sold at gas stations or stores. Adding a different coolant or distilled water will contaminate and permanently damage the system.

The coolant level sensor is pretty sensitive so unless the expansion tank is completely empty when the engine is cold, you can continue driving it until you are able to get to a dealership where they will most likely top it up for you with the correct coolant without charge.

Interesting enough, I have got the check coolant indicator the last two morning startups when it has been in the teens. I checked it and it is NOT low...wondering if this is an issue with this platform...with the sensors that is. I have a bluetec BTW,

Liquids expand/contract with temps. If your levels were borderline during warmer weather, that's probably why your sensors are going off like X-Mas lights. Heck, mine may very well do it when we get back up north in a coupla weeks. I heard temps were down to -16*F in Montreal and headed for even lower.

Poor ba$tards

Mine's been telling to check the coolant level, and the expansion tank is nearly full, so it appears that the level sensors are EXTREMELY sensitive and react to even the slightest change in level in the tank.

Take the cap off and look straight down into the expansion tank - if you can see what looks like a tiny little plastic square sticking up above the coolant level, you're too low for the sensor. That little plastic square is the proper fill level mark. It needs to be covered by the coolant.
