Question is it time to change air filters? last change unknown (w pics)

mainly posting this for my engine air filters since i have no record at all if they have ever been changed on this car prior to me owning it, and i'm pretty sure they should be pure white.

car currently @ 93265 km

engine filters: no records at all of them being changed
cabin filter: last change record shows Jun 2017 @ around 78000 km
combination filter: last change record shows Oct 2016 @ around 63000 km

these pics are after i shook off what i could and vacuumed out what i could from the filters.
I'm thinking to change the engine filters, but leave the cabin/dust and combination filters for now judging by how they look.

On the diesel MLs, you need to change the engine air filters and the oil TWICE as often as recommended by MB. The air filter on the ML is undersized for the OM642 and when it is not flowing at 100% it causes the engine to suck in more air through the PCV, which in turn draws way too much oil in the intake which then clogs things up and buggers up the MAF. Always use OEM filters... they've been through several revisions for a reason.

they are not cheap from what i have seen (combination filters mainly). I was going to change the engine filters, as i read and also mentioned here that the car likes fresh air and oil and those should be changed more frequently than the manual recommends, plus im unaware of when they were last changed.
local MB dealer engine filter set they said about $60 CAD (not bad price). the dust filter was cheap $25 CAD, but the combination filters were about $100 CAD for the pair. I have yet to look around online to see if i can find them cheaper.

I was thinking change engine filters now, possibly hold out on the dust and combination filters for 1 more year.

I assume the dust and combination filters just prevent dust and smells in the cabin? so as long as i dont have any smell issues i should be good?

I agree with you on the engine filters, but I didn't think the dust and combination filters looked that bad. I thought the combination filters are supposed to be that grayish colour?

The combination filters affect what you breathe in the cabin... the engine air filter affects what the engine breathes. Determine what is important to you and change accordingly.

If you think that $100 for a set of cabin filters that need to be changed every two years is a lot, I am afraid you've definitely bought the wrong car for your budget. It's a premium luxury vehicle and the maintenance costs also reflect that.

Diesels in general suck in a lot of air, does not matter which vehicle. The reason they suck in a lot of air is unlike a gasoline engine that has a butterfly valve in the throttle body to restrict air flow, the diesel are unrestricted. They are allowed to suck in as much air as possible. The GO Pedal on a diesel only controls the amount of fuel that is injected into each cylinder, while the GO Pedal on a gasoline engine control/restricts how much air is allowed to flow into the engine.

i did not know that, thanks for sharing.

I picked up engine filters and a dust filter from my local dealer the other day, just looking around at the combination filters and alternatives.

I didn't use any alternatives yet. But I bought one for next change in about 5 months. Looks very solid.
Used this brand in another car.
