If you have already done the DPF Delete then you can use whatever oil you want. Given that M1 5W-30 is not rated for MB229.31/51, only you can be the judge of whether or not you should be using that oil or not. In general the average price for 8L of MB 229.51 oil is around $90.

There are a couple of readily available oils that are compatible with the diesel. Pennzoil platinum euro lx is the one most often on sale so I buy that. Quaker state and Mobil also make proper oil.

Easy, Pennzoil Euro L 5w-30 $22 a jug

MB 229.51 is the diesel spec, it has full formal MB approval.

From a VAG perspective, it's like a VW 504 oil for a 502 price. Look up the cost of Mobil 1 ESP, for instance.

And the king is VW 504.00 507.00.... for anti wear and dpf , but if you prioritise fuel economy MB 229.52.

And why I use to protect , a dpf , two turbos and a drive chain etc with VW spec oil in an MB...

So it looks like I should be using 507 instead of 229.51/229.52 oil?

Yes, these days if you blink you will miss new specs. I like the Pennzoil Euro L, it clearly punches above it's weight. I own 4 cars and service about 6 with nobody paying me back. So I do economise a lot. In this, I am not married to specs strictly, it's good to know what oils compare to what specs, then consider the change interval, if it's substantially shorter, you don't need a long-life oil to go 6 months 5000 miles....etc.

I won't tell people what to use in their diesel engine, but gas engines have a lot of fudge room these days. Generally, MB 229.5 is the top spec.

I bought a ton of Rotella GT recently for almost nothing. It's a very modern add pack, and good visc....low volatility. No Euro specs, but neither does Rotella Synth 5w-40, and people have been using it a LONG time in Euros. MFG specs add to the cost, it's more of a licence than anything. You can buy a pre-approved additive pack from Lubrizol, mix in appropriate base oil, bottle & label it, and boom, in the spec oil business. People think MFGs go around looking for only the best oils and approve them like a race horse gets a wreath and thophy, no VW 502 costs $500k for 3 years, and anyone can get into selling it.

No, the point I made is that 507 is quite expensive, and 229.51 is the equivalent spec, available in PZ Euro L for dirt cheap.

Many Euro oils carry both 229.51 and VW 507, while PZ Euro L does not. I believe it keeps the cost down, not with a cheaper formula, but by skipping the cost of the VW 504 licence, passing it along to the customer.

I don't think you can go wrong with Euro L / 229.51 it is after all the appropriate spec. If you already had some 504 oil and wanted to use it in your MB, fine.

I've been using non approved 507 in my VW 1.9 TDI PD engine , high anti wear is crucial as the camshaft lobes are narrow thus experience high loadings , narrow because of lack of room due to the wide PD unit injector lobes .

If this supermarket non approved oil were of poor quality the lobes would be toast by now , 8 years in December .

This supermarket oil can be had extremely cheap when the manager has had a bump on the head .

My son has 2012 MB ML bluetech we use regular synthetic Costco Kerkland oil without any issue. So all the spec and detail in the above discussion leads to 10K mile oil change. I will never stick to 10 K oil change I do every 3 to 4K miles Cost around 40 bucks at home DIY.
