HELP- "connect last device" always appears

HELP- "connect last device" always appears
2015- ML350 4 matic. whenever i get into car (eg- after going into store, starting car for first time, etc) i always need to manually "connect last device". even if i turn the car off and back on i need to manually select "connect last device." my device is iphone 12pro. i see no settings in my iphone that will enable an automatic connection. i have the most current ios on the phone. it is the only device that i use in the car. is there a way of overriding this and set it up to "connect last device" automatically?

Do you have magnets on your phone or tablet? I've noticed that my Command behaves differently when I start the car if I have the phone on a magnetic mount. It will default to the phone app. It will connect successfully to the phone. If I don't have the magnet anywhere near the phone, Command will initialize in the last app used. My Command is older NTG 2.5 in X164.
