What’s this wragagagaga sound?

My 2014 Gasoline ML350 4matic has ~125,000 miles on it, and lately I am really starting to notice it’s got a nasty fast clicking sound when I first drive it after cold crank. After about 10 minutes you don’t really hear it as much any more.

Confusingly, if I immediately put the car in Neutral and rev the engine there’s no nasty sound. Also it doesn’t make the noise when idling. It’s only under acceleration in Drive when the engine is cold.

Would a bad head gasket or cracked exhaust manifold go away in neutral and then immediately return in drive? It sounds like those toy machine guns that quickly pulling the trigger causes a mechanical wragagagagahagagagaga really fast and on rythym.

It sounds like it’s coming from under the car far more than from the top of the engine block, it’s not a tickticktick it’s a wragagaga.😅

Thoughts?

I attached a quick video driving it in a parking garage (concrete walls amplifing the sound), that’s me revving the engine to produce the wragagagaga. Note it sounds way worse in real life.

Thanks
Joel

Didn't hear the sound on the video, only wind noise. From your description I would look into the torque converter, possibly also engine or trans mounts. Are there any vibrations felt in the steering wheel, seat or floor?

No thankfully no vibrations or other signs like that, only the sound. Sadly the cellphone treats all sounds equally so the wind noise is just as loud as the problem sound. I rev the engine about half way through the clip and you can just hear the wragagaga sound as the engine revs up and back down.

I will keep searching the forum history also. But haven’t found anything like this yet.

thanks!

Look to the transmission and propshafts if the sound is audible only in drive. Or engine/transmission mounts.

I have not had time to go to service to confirm (thankfully it’s a minor issue at this point), but my research is convincing me it’s a crack either in exhaust or exhaust manifold. Lots of info about these being sources of noise that go away when the engine gets warm (the steel expands and seals the crack, stopping the sound). It’s actually the normal wear and tear of this heat and cool cycling that causes the crack over time (or sudden cooling from cold water, like a under carriage spray in a car wash or driving through water).

I will come back and share the fix once I’m able to get to the service, I’ll also share the cost :/

Thanks
Joel

I had a noise under acceleration in my GLE350d. It was at about 2500-3000 rpm. A gearbox service and transfer box oil change cured it. If yours is due one anyway, maybe try that first.

Did it happen all the time at that rpm or did ot go away as the engine warmed up?
