Ml 550 Motor blown

Hello everyone, I’ve been experiencing my motor slowly losing compression and after a long 25 000 kms it has given up. I’ve lost half the motor (Cylinders 5,6,7,8)

I have a 2014 W166 ML 550 and am wondering if it’s possible to do a motor swap with any of the following M278 motors as it’s impossible to find an ML class motor. As it all seems good to go my concern is buying it and it not fitting

CLS 550
GL 550
S 550
And more…

any help is appreciated thank you

Worth listening to the effort to find a decent M278, and what you may be against.

Hope you are aware the M278 engine cylinder material changed during production, @March 2015 from aluminum coated to iron-cast coated cylinders. You may want to look for an engine after that date. However, they are also apparently prone to cylinder scoring. The issue may be the coating, and not the core cylinder material though.

Here for the M278 thread in the W212 forum ( https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...ml#post8905320)

If you're handy and have the space and tools, would it be worth pulling your engine (a known quantity) and having it rebuilt? Nothing like putting somebody else's unknowns under your hood...

Those engines are the same, I am just not sure if any programming needs to be performed after the install or not.

Yes. A change will require reprogramming especially if you change the ECU.

Here is my motto when buying MB used parts that seem the same as the one I already have:
1 - Ask if the VIN of the donor is available
2 - Input VIN into the EPC or one of the MB online parts store
3 - You may see several options for the "same part" based on the VIN. With a list of compatible Model/Class
4 - The last stick is: even if the part is identical, the donor car features are identical, it may still be considered theft relevant --> Coding is required.

For example, the M276 NA is different in all classes. The ML350 requires more oil than the E350 which I assume is a different oil pan.

Summary: they may look the same to the naked eye, but there can be subtleties; therefore, research is required.

Im not 100% sure. Certainly for ECU change. Not every part on every engine that looks the same, is the same. So you will probably find a conflict between engines and their modules and sensors. In any event, I'd be preparing for such to happen. Finding an engine with exactly the same parts as what you have, noting that MB update various bits over time, is unlikely and you probably won't know until you try it.
