Exclamation Transmission Missing Upper Gears

My 2014 ML350 Bluetec with 152,000 miles is experiencing a new problem at highway speeds. I noticed it when I slow to change lanes and the transmission drops down to D5. Acceleration does not shift up. The only way I can get back to D6 and then D7 is to use the paddle shifter (+) on the steering wheel. This does not happen all the time and of course NOT when the mechanic is in the car. I've asked to have this scanned but nothing is jumping out. Any recommendations?
