Tire pressures front and rear

Hi, my 2014 ML350 4matic has two stickers with different tire pressure settings. The front sticker on the driver side door says cold psi 45 front and 48 rear, while the sticker on gas tank door says 32&32 cold. They differ so much that I don’t know which one to follow. I thought 45 is really high for most tires as I’ve seen most of them are 30-35 psi cold. Dealer mechanic set them as 46 &46 psi which makes me wonder if they made a mistake. I feel it’s a little bumpy on ride but not sure if that’s because it’s a heavy vehicle? My 2016 4Runner is the similar size and weight but only requires 32 & 32 psi.

The difference depends on how the vehicle is loaded. The ML350 is spec'd at 4751 lbs. curb weight and 6283 lbs. max gross weight. If you're carrying 5 passengers + cargo that approximates 1500 lbs., then go with the 45/48 psi. If you drive around alone most of the time, stick with the lower pressure (normal) at 32 psi. I don't know why the door stickers and gas flap stickers differ by 4 psi at max load. If you frequently carry a couple passengers, I'd go with an intermediate pressure.

I guess the first label is for max load + max speed.

I've always wondered about this as well. I just stick in the middle at 40 psi and the ride is very comfortable. Tire wear and fuel mileage is very good as well.

I don't think I've ever looked at a tire inflation chart on a vehicle. I look at the sidewall information on the tire and then I make some allowance for how close to maximum load I am at. For trailers and heavy trucks I like to run at the high end of the sidewall information or sometimes even higher than the tire stamp. For passenger vehicles I typically run 32-35 PSI, no matter what it says on the sidewall. I know that's probably bad practice but its worked for roughly 50 years now. If I see abnormal tire wear I'll adjust accordingly. My father used to say "Blow 'em up until they're round". That wasn't entirely bad advice.

Thank Ford and Firestone for that. Since the Ford Explorer scandal, which took Firestone with it, there has been a tendency to inflate tires like the vehicle is fully loaded. Nobody wants to be sued because of negligence when servicing tires. Whatever that really means.

I run my E and ML around 36 psi cold. When hot the TPMS says 39 or 40, and the tires on the E last @50K+; therefore, I have no worries. The ML is due for another set soon at 92K+, and plan to repeat the recipe.

I setup 40 PSI on all tires ...I didn't want go to 48 PSI due to tires are not built for that pressure ...Based on experience, 38-40 PSI is optimal range for me,

TPMS Fault in Cluster

Noticed a couple in this thread having a '14 ML350 4matic Blue Tec, I own the same vehicle. I was very surprised that I cannot see each individual tire's pressure to identify which sensor may be going. I checked all the tire pressures, I have the 20" AMG Rims so my pressure ratings are different, I stay around 34-35.

When I asked the dealer they said some production models didn't have that function, just the general cluster symbol.
