M276 Engine Oil leak?

About to dive into the 100,000 mile service on the wife’s 2015 ML350. Serpentine belt, all filters, coils and spark plugs, transmission fluid and differentials and finally a detail. However, before I dive into it I noticed this leak? I am 99% sure it’s the upper timing covers leaking and that black stuff isn’t road grime. Pretty common on those M276 engines. Had many of these engines but never one with a leak. Are my eyes playing tricks or is it actually a leak? Anyone ever DIY for this repair?

You guys cop it bad there with rust don’t you, that would mess with my car ocd. Probably wouldn’t hurt to give it a good degrease and keep an eye on it for a couple of days. Could it have been residue from spilling oil into the fill hole.

Unfortunately we do. While the interior/exterior are in amazing shape the engine bay has rust. Drives me crazy but it’s only this car and my GLK oddly enough. Good idea on de greasing it.

you got it...
The Bk1 upper timing cover is actively leaking. The leak itself is not super important. It's a call for early maintenance items.

> TIMER COVER(S) AREA:
-- Replace chain tensioners and CPS while around there.

-- Inspect "magnet" solenoids are still leaking free or not.

> LOWER ENGINE:
-- Remove Alternator (2 screws + 1 nut) and clean it well. Replace it's internal voltage "regulator/brushset" with OE part.

Excellent confirmation! Yea I mine as well do that all when it’s open. Makes sense to do so.

Left size is pretty easy to reseal it..... right side (passenger) requires intake manifold to be removed.... where doing plugs does not....

Thank You. This is my first time tackling the M276 oil seepage/leak.
