Major headache - bad turbo

On Monday, I dropped off my 08' CL600 to the dealer, complaining about whining noise coming from the top of the engine (while driving), especially with hard acceleration and immediately after that, declaration. They just called me - left turbo needs replacing (checked with stethoscope). For that job they say engine has to be dropped, major job around 3 weeks. Part has to be ordered from Germany.
Car is under the warranty thank God. Anybody had any issues with turbos on 600? Do they really need to drop the engine, dissemble the suspension and all that crap?
I'm really pissed off.
Btw, the car is not modified in any way.

I picked up the car from the dealer, no reason to be there till the part comes in.
Interesting that there is a disagreement between my SA (service advisor) and shop foreman, stating that he believes (foreman) that possibly faulty air hose is malfunctioning

On the other hand, my SA said, they called MB North America HQ and there is NO ONE occurrence in US that turbo went bad.

Murphy Law kicking-in for me? Why do I have to be the first???

Ironically, my passenger side turbo has also failed.

Here's a video of the whining noise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUF-hnIW5Gc

I purchased a pair of SL65 AMG turbos with about 20K miles on them, the guy at the junk yard told me they were "fresh road kill" but somehow they came in the original MB boxes... weird. I had them checked out by a very reputable turbo shop and they were perfect.

To replace the turbos, the exhaust has to come down, the transmission has to come down and then the motor goes up. Should not take 3 weeks. Job takes about 15 hours.

I called 3 MB dealerships to do the work, all 3 denied me, unless I purchased the turbos from them, which were about $3300/ea. No thanks.

Well I was just going by what was written in WIS.

Is the subframe removal easier than pulling all that **** out and up?

Ha!!!
It's done (sorry for a bit dated update). And there was no need to drop the engine. Me happy
My SA informed me (off-record) that they were able to tilt the engine and replace the turbo. The car, again, is as quiet as a mouse (almost)

I'm sure they billed MB for the whole full fledged officially written WIS/DAS procedure.

Tilt the engine? Which way? Last I checked there was about an inch of clearance on either side...

Didn't ask for details but from the conversation, I gather they tilted the engine backwards (back being up). The car was ready within 1 1/2 day.

Btw, the video you posted was EXACTLY the noise my engine developed.
