Engine Rebuild/Crank Pulley Vibrating
The serpentine belt flew off my 2003 Mercedes S600 with 145k miles when I was driving. At first, I thought it wasn't going to be a big deal and that it probably just needed an idler pulley. However, the mechanic said that the crank pulley was vibrating because the crank pulley bolt was loose and caused it to strip. He said that caused the crankshaft to get messed up inside the engine. He said he either needed to take apart the front of the engine or replace the engine altogether. Both of those options cost almost as much as the entire car is worth. I had the B Service done at a Mercedes dealer, and I feel like they should have recognized the problem as part of the inspection. I also had the water pump replaced recently at an independent shop.
I'm looking for any advice you all may have on this matter. Has anyone seen this kind of issue before? Copart said they would buy the car for $1600 as-is which would be an enormous loss for me. Do you all have any better suggestions as to what I should do?
