Description:
Hey folks, I am moving north to a snow/ice prone climate and thus, sadly, have decided to let go of the last great Mercedes diesel sedan in favor of an SUV.
Carfax Report
I am the original owner of this car, bought from the Little Rock dealer in 2006 and dealer serviced for the first 10 years. After moving to Dallas and getting rather poor service from the dealer here on a GL I owned for a couple of years (protip: air shocks melt in DFW heat indexes!) I switched to a Euro specialty shop in 2017 for stuff other than oil changes.
The Carfax is clean, one owner, and no damage/accidents. In 15 years it has been towed once... by and to the dealer for a key computer failure/replacement.
Status of other 'big ticket' items: the SBC hydraulic pump and A/C compressor are both original, neither have been replaced or overhauled. The SBC system has been flushed and refilled at more than regular intervals. It has the H/K audio and fiber optic sound system, the amp and other components are original. The original COMAND unit is still installed and works fine, although I haven't used the NAV in awhile due to the DVD being dated and prone to get dirty in the trunk, as most people do these days I tend to use my phone. I had to replace the CD changer/control panel with a serviceable used one due to a soda spill on the buttons, and didn't bother to reinstall the CD changer since I don't use it. The original CD changer/control panel will come with the car if whoever gets it wants to put the CD changer back in. It also has Sirius installed from the factory.
Exterior
Exterior pics are attached, I would say the condition is "very good" for its age. There are a couple of gravel scrapes that could be touched up which you can see if you zoom in on the pics, but the car has never been damaged by a hailstone or another car.
All of the plastic undercarriage parts are intact, with normal wear/tear except for the front wheel well liners, which were replaced with new during a front suspension overhaul in 2017.
There are no rain water/weather strip leaks. Everything works as it should including all sunroof functions. There has never been any hail or water damage to the car, and it's lived all of its life either in Little Rock or Dallas. It has never been nearer to salt water than the NOLA suburbs for a week or two when visiting family there.
Mechanical
A complete front suspension overhaul was done after 11 years. I didn't pay dealer prices for that, I did it with help from a friend at the airplane repair shop I use here. My order confirmation including all parts replaced is attached to the end of the linked Carfax report. It got all new Lemfoerder control arms, ball joints, etc on the front end, along with factory springs and Bilstein shocks in 2017.
The rear suspension has NOT been overhauled and should be on your list of to-dos if you buy this car. It's drive-able, but if you're used to well-kept Mercedes ride quality you'll notice the rear seems stiffer than it should be. The rear end suspension is a much simpler job and about half the price in parts versus the front, if you're unfamiliar.
The main transmission seal has been replaced in the past 5 years by the dealer, otherwise the car never had any transmission issues.
When I did the front suspension overhaul we repacked the front wheel bearings and I had the Euro specialty shop I use here flush, inspect, and line up the sensors for the SBC hydraulic system, it all works fine.
There are no leaks, all of the fluids stay where they're supposed to be.
It's due for motor mounts. Here in Texas where it's generally very hot, the current mounts are okay, but on our handful of cold days last year I noticed some starting roughness until it warmed up. Again, it's okay to drive but replacing motor mounts before this coming winter rolls around will need to be on the short list.
Tires will probably need replaced next year. I don't buy the dealer tires anymore, they're just not worth a thousand dollars. The cheaper options provide comparable longevity for about half the price, and it's such a heavy car to begin with that ride quality doesn't suffer much from lesser tires, in my opinion, at least not enough to pay the dealer an extra 500-600 bucks every time tires are due.
Fuel economy is right on the book numbers, you'll see 37 mpg on the highway.
Interior
The interior isn't detailed in these pics, just vacuum'd. What you see is what you get. There is the typical wear on the B trim pillars, a hole on the driver side and a smaller hole on the passenger side. They are original. Honestly, as others have noted I'm sure, it's a bad design, there shouldn't be cloth there due to the rubbing when you enter or exit the vehicle. If it were me buying this car I'd take the B trim pillars to an upholstery shop and have them put vinyl on there.
The headliner is starting to sag in the rear, and is also original from 2006.
The "elbow hole" common to these vehicles on the vinyl center console on the front has been patched by a local Fibre New guy in the past month. The same guy cleaned and recolored the steering wheel. The shifter boot was patched at the same time but honestly, if I knew how easy it was to replace (and find a replacement) I would've gone that route since I'm pretty sure I paid the Fibre New guy more to patch the old one than a replacement is worth. That'll be a a good easy DIY 50-60 dollar job for the new owner.
All of the inside electrical stuff works, A/C blows cold, and the seat heaters work fine as well. The center speaker was replaced due to the notorious "buzz" from a failed mounting gasket in 2016 with a factory new one.
My 2007 window tint job is starting to (finally) show some peeling signs. There are a couple of bubbles in the rear, a small tear on the driver's side rear window, and a little bit of peel at the base of the driver's window that I hear 'click' when I move that window up and down. I'd probably pull it all out and leave it out, or get it all redone.
The rear window shade and rear headrest releases work fine.
The trunk is in "like new" condition, it has only ever had grocery store stuff in it. The electric trunk remote works, and the push-button close works as well.
The chrome on the driver inside door handle has peeled. I have a replacement in the mail this week, can install it if you like or send the new owner home with it. Same goes for the chrome trim around the boot. Replacement is in the mail and I'll pop it in when it arrives.
I have two of the later model chrome-lined key remotes, which I believe I got around 2012. The original all-black-plastic ones weren't very durable, so I replaced them both after breaking one of them.
Summary
I don't see another 2006 E class diesel for sale in this sort of condition with this low amount of mileage right now. For a headliner job and a thousand dollars worth of rear suspension/motor mount parts, you'll have yourself a daily driver that's good for another many years and hundreds of thousands of miles.
Happy to talk on the phone to whoever is interested, PM me for email and phone contact info. Also happy to meet and let someone drive it around DFW if you're local or want to come in from out of town and see it.
The required-maintenance diesel filtration system began in 2007, this car doesn't have one.
2006 was the last year without a service-required exhaust filtration system, this car should be grandfathered into not requiring that (it was only sold new in 45 states in 2006).
This thread suggests that as long as the car is "used" in California, it is exempt from the regs and can be registered.
edit: This story from 2005 says the car didn't pass emissions tests when new in CA, ME, VT, NY, and MA. You'll need to verify those other states will take it as CA seems to if it's a used car.
If I weren't moving to a cold climate, I'd drive it another 10 years. It's honestly the best car I've owned. Just a lot of heavy engineering in these older iron block diesels compared to the aluminum and plastic on newer cars. I don't care what kind of wizardry the electronics engineers come up with, you can't make a light car ride like a heavy car.
I bought a 3 year old GL with air suspension from MB of Plano in 2013 and went through about a 6 month run-around with them where I'd bring them the car with a leaking air shock, they'd let it sit for a day and do nothing to it, and then just give it back to me with the shock still leaking hoping I would give up and go away. So I did go away... I waited until a hail storm wiped out all of the used car lots and traded it for (roughly) what I paid for it and got the wife a different SUV. Her and I were joking at the time that the XC90 they were giving us as a loaner was in every way better than the SUV we owned.
I'll never give MB of Plano another dime.
The Little Rock dealer on the other hand was an overall pleasant dealership to deal with, I'd be happy to buy another car from them or use them for service. Every time warranty work came up with them, they just did it without any questions asked.
